ABOUT THE ROLE

Lindii Peace Foundation (LPF) is seeking qualified, compassionate and experienced Midwives to provide quality maternal, newborn and reproductive health services to vulnerable and crisis-affected populations.

The Midwife will be responsible for providing comprehensive midwifery care to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, as well as providing essential newborn care, reproductive health services, health education and appropriate referrals.

The successful candidates will work closely with Medical Doctors, Nurse Officers, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, community health workers and other members of the health team to ensure safe, respectful and quality care for women, newborns and their families.

The role will also contribute to antenatal and postnatal services, safe delivery, emergency obstetric and newborn care, family planning, prevention of maternal and newborn complications, infection prevention and control, clinical documentation and community health promotion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Antenatal Care

  • Provide comprehensive antenatal care to pregnant women in accordance with approved clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Conduct routine maternal assessments, including monitoring of vital signs and pregnancy-related indicators.
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and promptly refer or escalate cases requiring medical or specialist attention.
  • Provide appropriate counselling on nutrition, birth preparedness, danger signs, hygiene and healthy pregnancy practices.
  • Monitor fetal wellbeing within the scope of professional competence.
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up of pregnant women throughout pregnancy.
  • Maintain accurate antenatal records and registers.
  • Promote timely attendance for antenatal care and skilled birth services.

Labour and Delivery

  • Provide safe and respectful midwifery care to women during labour and childbirth.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal condition throughout labour.
  • Conduct normal deliveries within the scope of professional competence and in accordance with approved protocols.
  • Recognize abnormal labour, obstetric complications and danger signs and promptly escalate or refer cases.
  • Provide appropriate immediate interventions during obstetric emergencies within professional competence.
  • Support emergency referral and coordination where higher-level care is required.
  • Promote respectful maternity care and ensure women are treated with dignity, privacy and respect.
  • Accurately document labour, delivery and maternal outcomes.

Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care

  • Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric and newborn emergencies.
  • Provide appropriate emergency interventions within the scope of professional competence.
  • Support management of postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, prolonged or obstructed labour and other obstetric complications in accordance with approved protocols.
  • Identify newborn danger signs and initiate appropriate immediate care.
  • Support stabilization of patients prior to referral where required.
  • Ensure timely communication with the Medical Doctor and other relevant clinical personnel.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities.

Postnatal and Newborn Care

  • Provide comprehensive postnatal care to mothers and newborns.
  • Monitor mothers for postpartum complications and identify danger signs requiring medical attention.
  • Conduct routine newborn assessments and monitor newborn wellbeing.
  • Promote early initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.
  • Provide counselling on maternal nutrition, newborn care, hygiene and danger signs.
  • Support appropriate newborn care, including temperature maintenance and infection prevention.
  • Identify sick or at-risk newborns and facilitate timely referral.
  • Provide follow-up care and ensure appropriate documentation.

Reproductive Health and Family Planning

  • Provide appropriate reproductive health information, counselling and services within professional scope.
  • Provide family planning counselling and support clients to make informed choices.
  • Provide or facilitate access to appropriate family planning methods in accordance with approved protocols.
  • Provide counselling on sexually transmitted infections and prevention where relevant.
  • Promote informed, voluntary and confidential reproductive health services.
  • Maintain accurate reproductive health and family planning records.

Maternal and Newborn Health Education

  • Provide health education to women, partners, caregivers and families.
  • Educate clients on pregnancy, childbirth preparedness, postpartum care and newborn care.
  • Promote recognition of maternal and newborn danger signs and timely care-seeking.
  • Provide counselling on breastfeeding, nutrition, hygiene and infection prevention.
  • Participate in community health education and awareness activities.
  • Promote respectful and culturally appropriate communication with women and families.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Adhere to established infection prevention and control standards.
  • Apply appropriate hand hygiene and standard precautions during all clinical procedures.
  • Use personal protective equipment appropriately.
  • Ensure appropriate cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of equipment.
  • Promote safe handling and disposal of healthcare waste.
  • Maintain a clean and safe maternity and clinical environment.
  • Report infection prevention and control risks or breaches through established mechanisms.

Clinical Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely maternal and newborn clinical records.
  • Ensure appropriate completion of antenatal, delivery, postnatal and other relevant registers.
  • Document clinical assessments, interventions, referrals and outcomes accurately.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Contribute to accurate collection and reporting of maternal and newborn health data.
  • Support preparation of routine health programme reports.
  • Ensure records are maintained in accordance with organizational and applicable health standards.

Referral and Continuity of Care

  • Identify women and newborns requiring higher-level or specialist care.
  • Initiate and support timely referral in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate referral documentation is completed.
  • Communicate relevant clinical information to receiving facilities or health personnel.
  • Follow up referred cases where appropriate and support continuity of care.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on referral instructions and follow-up requirements.

Teamwork and Programme Support

  • Work collaboratively with Medical Doctors, Nurse Officers, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, community health workers and other health staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case management and clinical review meetings.
  • Provide appropriate technical support and mentorship to relevant health personnel where required.
  • Participate in outreach, mobile clinics and community-based maternal and newborn health activities.
  • Support health programme planning, implementation and review.
  • Contribute to identifying gaps in maternal and newborn health services and recommending practical improvements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Midwifery Science (B.Mid), Registered Midwife (RM), or equivalent recognized midwifery qualification.
  • Valid registration and current practising licence with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional midwifery experience.
  • Demonstrated experience providing antenatal, delivery and postnatal care.
  • Demonstrated experience providing essential newborn care.
  • Good knowledge of maternal and newborn health protocols and standards.
  • Ability to recognize obstetric and newborn danger signs and initiate appropriate action or referral.
