The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for providing senior nursing supervision either within out-patient services (inclusive of ambulatory and clinic-based care) or in-patient services (24-hour ward-based care).
The role supports nursing leadership, coordinates care, supervises nursing staff, and ensures compliance with clinical-governance and professional standards in the assigned stream.
Responsibilities
Provide senior nursing leadership and supervision within the assigned stream.
Supervise, mentor and appraise nursing staff; support their development.
Maintain accurate and timely nursing records and uphold clinical governance standards.
Ensure compliance with infection prevention practices.
Maintain a valid NMCN registration/licence and MCPDP compliance.
Act as a senior resource for clinical escalation and decision-making.
Coordinate injection, dressing, and minor-procedure clinics (out-patient stream).
Coordinate shift handover, admission, and discharge planning (in-patient stream).
Ensure care-plan reviews and documentation audit compliance.
Support incident reporting within the policy window.
Required skills
Ability to lead, supervise and coordinate nursing staff.
Knowledge of nursing practices appropriate to the assigned stream (out-patient or in-patient).
Competence in nursing assessment, care planning, and safe medication administration.
Understanding of patient safety, infection prevention, and clinical governance.
Accurate nursing record-keeping.
Competent use of clinical systems.
Effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
Nice to have
Additional registrable or post-basic nursing qualifications in fields like midwifery, public health, or specialist nursing.
Experience
Minimum of 8 years of post-registration (NMCN) nursing experience, including substantial experience at the Principal Nursing Officer grade or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and support nursing staff in either out-patient or in-patient care settings.
Education
Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from an accredited School/College of Nursing or a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc/BSc Nursing) from a recognised university.
Completion of any required orientation/internship and NYSC (for degree holders) or a valid exemption where applicable.
