Role Purpose

  • This position will effectively develop and implement follow-up preventive maintenance programs for all machines, equipment and other facilities and installations on site for maximum life, productivity and efficiency.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Plant Maintenance

  • To develop efficient and effective preventive maintenance programs for all equipment and machines.
  • To implement budget controls and monitor the maintenance budget to ensure no over-expenditure.
  • To organize direct and motivate the maintenance team to optimize productivity.
  • To provide effective support and project management to ensure company projects are completed within the scheduled times and cost.
  • To provide sound technical and engineering maintenance advice for equipment, machines and facilities improvement.
  • To implement ISO/HACCP/DOHSS/NEMA recommendation within the company.
  • To facilitate competitive sourcing of cost value engineering services to maximize company returns.
  • Analyze budgets and continuously control production costs and identify/rectify waste measures.
  • Make decisions and advice the business on equipment use, maintenance, modification and procurement
  • Monitor and review the performance of staff and organize necessary interventions for improvement.
  • Ensure, efficient collaboration and co-ordination between relevant departments including Production, Distribution and Management
  • Driving root cause analysis initiatives on equipment availability and performance losses and following up to ensure corrective actions are implemented
  • Coordinating orientation of all new employees within maintenance to ensure that it is done procedurally

Process documentation and Reporting

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are recorded and documents well maintained for all processes
  • Ensure all maintenance reports are generated and reviewed on time i.e. MTTR, MTBF, utilities report, inventory etc.
  • Ensure all reports are shared with key parties and that are error free
  • Lead the stocktake process and take corrective actions against variances in the maintenance store

Food Safety

  • Ensure the Food Safety Management System and customer specific quality standards are implemented for all equipment and production processes.
  • Support the Food & Safety team members at the plant to perform their assigned responsibilities to drive a positive food safety culture.
  • Ensure prompt resolution of complaints/equipment breakdown supported by Root Cause Analyses.
  • Enhance customer experience through availing machines that produce conforming products
  • Maintain GMPs above 90%
  • Ensure compliance to legal/regulatory requirements
  • Implement Quality Plan and other food safety programs
  • Adopt the best industrial practice by maintaining proper hygiene levels
  • Conduct equipment inspection for efficiency

Occupational Safety, Health and Environment

  • Ensure OSHA 2007 is implemented and adhered to by all employees & outsourced contactors/visitors.
  • Drive a positive occupational safety ownership, health and welfare culture at all levels of the including workplace inspection & hazard identification.
  • Support the SHE Committee members at the Plant to perform their assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Investigate all near misses, accidents and incidents and ensure timely reporting in line with policies & procedures - Use problem solving technic to solve chronic issues related to safety
  • Ensure proper equipment and process design that promotes safety - Safeguard and protect equipment designed to enhance employee safety.

Continual Improvement

  • Ensure PaTaMu initiatives and projects are implemented leading to continual improvement.
  • Continuously identify opportunities for improvement for all equipment and apply PaTaMu methodologies to improve.
  • Lead training and upskilling initiatives of technicians and production staff i.e. AM, TPM
  • Encourage generation and implementation of PaTaMu ideas to drive a culture of innovation and creativity.
  • Ensure employees have a good understanding of Kaizen and how the PaTaMu model works.
  • Identify process challenges & use PDCA to address bottlenecks
  • Coordinate all continual improvement projects for the function
  • Enhance employee competences through trainings
  • Support activities around Unga's culture code - FIRST.
  • Participate in organizing site events and initiatives as guided.
  • Drive an effective accountability system in the Plant through daily work management. Utilize Daily Standard Work & Leader Standard Work.

Leadership & Accountability

  • Oversee work performance of staff including goal setting, learning & development
  • Conduct HK Reviews for the maintenance team by reviewing strategies against performance. Participate in the monthly HK Reviews.
  • Conduct periodic performance review, appraisals for employees, develop and implement training plans
  • Coaching/mentoring employees to scale performance and engagement levels.
  • Improve process accountability through F2F discussions.
  • Ensure a competent and engaged workforce by supporting and driving programmes such as talent mapping, implementation of personal development plans, face-to-face feedback sessions, effective meetings and succession planning.
  • Conflict resolution. Ensure issues brought forward are resolved and escalated on time

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical /Electrical Engineering
  • At least (8) years' experience in production and plant operations, with at least (3) years Managerial Level.
  • Hands-on experience on modern PLC operated process equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical data, drawings as well as manuals.
  • Proven ability in Project Management is an added advantage
  • Registered member of the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK)
  • Basic Finance Knowledge and Experiences with an ERP are added advantage
  • Excellent leadership and human resource management skills
  • Ability to manage a variety of cross-functional team members
  • Competence in problem solving, team building, planning and decision making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
