Job Summary

The successfully candidate will be mandated to support regional efforts in promoting energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with IMO regulations and guidelines. The Technical Expert will work under the MTCC Africa Head and Project director, JKUAT, national and regional maritime stakeholders, governments, and international organizations to ensure Africa's active participation in global maritime decarbonization efforts. The role involves technical support, research, and capacity building to help stakeholders implement sustainable practices tailored to Africa's maritime sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement regional GHG emissions inventory and reporting systems in line with IMO guidelines.
  • Support data collection, reporting, and inventory management for GHG and energy data from African ports and shipping operators.
  • Provide technical guidance on compliance with IMO regulations, including MARPOL Annex VI, EEXI, CII, and DCS.
  • Collaborate with port authorities, flag states, and operators to establish Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks.
  • Apply modeling tools to assess policy, technological, and regulatory changes for sustainable shipping.
  • Promote awareness and build capacity through workshops, training, and knowledge-sharing forums on sustainable maritime practices.
  • Strengthen partnerships with IMO, other MTCC regional centers, NGOs, and industry stakeholders to coordinate GHG reduction efforts across Africa.
  • Conduct research on technologies and best practices for emissions reduction and energy efficiency relevant to African ports and shipping.
  • Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and knowledge products to guide stakeholders on sustainable shipping solutions.

Minimum Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering and Maritime related discipline. However, candidates with BSc Electrical/Mechanical or other engineering disciplines with a bias towards Energy/Climate Policy, or a related field will be considered.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental management, marine engineering, or maritime operations. Experience in GHG emissions reduction, energy efficiency, or biofouling management is desirable.

Occupational Health & Safety (OSHA): Support workplace safety compliance across office and field sites, ensuring statutory medical checks and incident/injury reporting under WIBA are consistently executed. Employee Lifecycle & Onboarding Recruitment & Onboarding: Coordinate end-to-end recruitment for mid-level and operational roles with line managersincluding vacancy drafting, screening, interviews, reference checks, and structured onboarding. Leave & Benefits Tracking: Track statutory leave accruals (annual, sick, maternity, paternity) and administer staff medical cover, life insurance, and benefit changes alongside Finance. Performance, Learning & Payroll Inputs Performance Reviews: Coordinate the performance management cycle, tracking completion of appraisals, Personal Development Plans (PDPs), and follow-up actions. Payroll Input Verification: Collate and verify accurate monthly payroll inputsincluding attendance registers, approved adjustments, and leave allowanceswithin agreed deadlines. Candidate Profile & Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management or a related field. Active registration with IHRM Kenya is preferred. Experience: 3 - 5 years of progressive generalist experience across the entire employee lifecycle (recruitment, employee relations, statutory compliance, performance management, and HR administration). Industry Context: Experience within tourism, hospitality, travel, safari, or a fast-paced multi-site operational environment is highly desirable. Legal & Technical Expertise: Thorough working knowledge of Kenyan employment legislation, statutory requirements, HR data management, and proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel) and HR systems.
