About the role

• To provide experienced clinical care in dentistry, managing patients largely independently across out-patient and in-patient settings, supporting consultant-led care, and supervising and supporting junior medical officers within the dentistry service.

Responsibilities

• Provide largely independent assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in dentistry, appropriate to the level of the role, referring complex cases appropriately.
• Support consultant-led clinics, ward rounds and procedures.
• Supervise and support medical officers and trainees, contributing to their development, and participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and patient-safety activities.
• Maintain accurate, timely clinical records and current MDCN registration/licence in line with internal clinical policy.
• Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team, coordinating care with other services and supporting managed-care/HMO processes through evidence-based, cost-effective practice.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS or BChD) or an equivalent registrable dental qualification from a recognised institution.
• Completion of the required national housemanship/internship and NYSC, or a valid exemption where applicable.
• Minimum of 5 years of post-NYSC clinical experience, including progression through Medical Officer grades.
• Substantial post-registration clinical experience, including experience at medical/dental officer level.
• Demonstrable competence in the independent clinical management of patients in dentistry, and in supporting and supervising junior dental staff.
• Experience working within a multidisciplinary team in a hospital setting relevant to dentistry.

Required skills:

• Strong clinical knowledge of dentistry and the ability to manage most cases independently.
• Ability to supervise and support junior medical officers.
• Understanding of clinical governance, audit and patient safety.
• Sound clinical record-keeping and competent use of hospital clinical systems.
• Effective communication with patients, families and colleagues.
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

Nice to have:

• Evidence of progress toward a postgraduate dental fellowship (e.g. primary or part examinations of the National Postgraduate Medical College or the West African College of Surgeons, Faculty of Dental Surgery).
• Additional training relevant to the area of practice (e.g. life support, clinical skills, quality improvement).
