Job Summary

  • The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the Company's day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, reconciliations, statutory compliance, payables, receivables, treasury support, and financial controls.
  • The role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records and reports, supporting budget and cash flow management, coordinating statutory obligations, and providing timely financial information to Management.
  • The Senior Accountant will work closely with the Finance Lead and other departments to maintain strong financial discipline, ensure compliance with approved financial policies and procedures, and support effective financial decision-making across the Company.

Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting:

  • Oversee the accurate recording and processing of all financial transactions in accordance with applicable accounting standards and Company policies.
  • Review journal entries, ledgers, and accounting postings to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
  • Prepare management accounts and supporting financial schedules for Management review.
  • Conduct account reconciliations and ensure outstanding items are investigated and resolved promptly.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end financial closing activities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Identify financial discrepancies and implement appropriate corrective actions.

Accounts Payable & Receivable:

  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable activities.
  • Review vendor invoices and payment documentation for accuracy, completeness and appropriate approval before processing.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables and coordinate timely follow-up on customer payments.
  • Maintain accurate ageing reports for receivables and payables.
  • Monitor payment obligations and ensure approved liabilities are processed within agreed timelines.
  • Investigate and resolve vendor and customer account discrepancies.

Treasury & Cash Management:

  • Support the Finance Lead in monitoring the Company's cash position and liquidity requirements.
  • Prepare regular cash position and cash flow reports.
  • Review and reconcile bank accounts and ensure all reconciling items are promptly resolved.
  • Monitor petty cash and other operational funds.
  • Support banking transactions and maintain appropriate banking documentation.
  • Escalate actual or anticipated cash flow constraints to the Finance Lead promptly.

Budgeting, Cost Control & Financial Analysis:

  • Support the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Monitor departmental expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Prepare budget versus actual analysis and identify significant variances.
  • Provide explanations and recommendations for material cost variances.
  • Monitor operational expenditure and identify opportunities for improved cost control.
  • Provide financial analysis and information required for management decision-making.

Tax, Statutory Compliance & Audit:

  • Coordinate the preparation and processing of applicable statutory obligations, including PAYE, Pension, NSITF, ITF, VAT and WHT.
  • Ensure statutory financial records and supporting documentation are properly maintained.
  • Support internal and external audit activities and provide requested schedules and documentation within agreed timelines.
  • Monitor audit queries and support the timely resolution and closure of audit findings.
  • Ensure accounting activities comply with applicable financial regulations and Company policies.

Financial Controls & Governance:

  • Implement and maintain effective accounting controls to safeguard Company assets and financial information.
  • Review financial transactions for compliance with approved policies, procedures and authorization limits.
  • Identify control weaknesses, financial risks and irregularities and escalate them appropriately.
  • Ensure proper segregation of duties and financial approval processes are maintained.
  • Maintain accurate financial registers, schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Support continuous improvement of accounting processes and financial controls.

Procurement, Contract & Vendor Financial Review:

  • Review financial documentation relating to procurement transactions and vendor payments.
  • Support verification of purchase orders, invoices, payment requests and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure financial commitments are aligned with approved budgets and authorization requirements.
  • Maintain accurate vendor financial records and support vendor account reconciliation.
  • Provide financial input into contract and procurement reviews where required.

Payroll & Cross-Functional Support:

  • Collaborate with HR on payroll preparation, validation and reconciliation.
  • Review payroll schedules and supporting documentation to ensure financial accuracy.
  • Liaise with Projects, Commercial, Supply Chain and Corporate Services on finance related matters.
  • Provide timely financial information and support to other departments where required.
  • Participate in special finance projects and other assignments delegated by the Finance Lead or Management.

Team Support & Accountability:

  • Provide guidance and technical support to junior finance and accounting staff.
  • Review assigned accounting tasks and ensure departmental deadlines are achieved.
  • Promote accuracy, accountability and compliance within the Finance function.
  • Support the Finance Lead in implementing finance policies, procedures and process improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline.
  • ICAN qualification is mandatory. Candidates must be a qualified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years' relevant experience in accounting and finance.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, accounting principles, taxation and statutory compliance.
  • Practical experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software/ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
  • Experience within the Oil & Gas, Engineering, Construction or related project environment is an advantage.

Qualifications and Requirements Education & Certifications: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline. Professional accounting qualification such as ICAN, ACCA, or equivalent is required. Membership of a recognized professional accounting body is highly preferred. Master's degree or MBA is an added advantage. Experience: 7 - 10 years' progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably within the hospitality, hotel, tourism, or service industry. At least 3 years in a Financial Controller, Chief Accountant, Finance Manager, Senior Accountant, or equivalent supervisory role. Proven experience managing hotel accounting operations and financial controls. Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and audit coordination. Experience with hospitality accounting systems, PMS, POS, and financial management software is highly desirable. Demonstrable experience managing and developing finance teams.
