Occupational Health Physician At The African Medical Centre Of Excellence (amce)

Job Objective

• The Occupational Health Physician will be responsible for providing strategic medical leadership and clinical expertise to safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of all AMCE employees. The role holder will oversee the medical aspects of occupational health programs, manage complex cases, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide authoritative guidance on workplace health hazards.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Clinical Occupational Health Services

• Review pre-placement health assessments and periodic evaluations for employees in high-risk roles.
• Diagnose and manage work-related illnesses and injuries, including complex and chronic cases.
• Provide immediate medical management for occupational exposures (e.g., needlesticks, chemical splashes).
• Oversee medical surveillance programs for employees exposed to specific hazards.
• Advise on fitness-for-duty and work restrictions/accommodations.
• Lead clinical response to workplace medical emergencies.

Medical Leadership & Program Strategy

• Provide medical direction for the entire occupational health service, setting clinical standards.
• Develop and revise medical protocols and procedures for occupational health conditions.
• Advise hospital leadership on the medical implications of workplace policies and emerging health risks.
• Integrate occupational health strategy with the hospital's overall safety and business continuity plans.
• Champion a data-driven approach to preventing workplace illness and injury.
• Represent the medical voice of occupational health in hospital committees.

Regulatory Compliance & Medical Ethics

• Advise on specific service issues such as Drug and Alcohol Testing; Legislative update and interpretation; Employment and Health Matters.
• Monitor and interpret health and safety regulations and ensure compliance.
• Serve as the primary medical authority during internal and external audits and inspections.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in handling sensitive employee health information.
• Provide expert medical testimony in legal proceedings related to workers' compensation or disability.
• Stay abreast of evolving legislation and best practices in occupational medicine.
• Ensure informed consent and ethical conduct in all health surveillance activities.

Disability & Case Management

• Liaise with HR in the management of complex workers' compensation claims and disability cases.
• Advise on return-to-work readiness, specifying necessary accommodations.
• Collaborate with HR, managers, and insurers to facilitate effective case resolution.
• Develop individualized rehabilitation plans for employees with prolonged work-related disabilities.
• Analyze disability data to identify trends and implement targeted prevention strategies.
• Minimize lost work time and associated costs through proactive medical case management.

Health Risk Assessment & Hazard Control

• Conduct advanced risk assessments for chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic workplace hazards.
• Provide authoritative medical guidance on the selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Advise on ergonomic improvements to reduce the risk of injuries.
• Review and approve health risk assessments for new equipment, processes, or chemicals.
• Lead epidemiological investigations into clusters of employee illness or exposure.
• Advise the Infection Control team on occupational aspects of infectious disease management.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of engineering and administrative controls from a medical perspective.

Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity

• Provide medical oversight in the development of emergency response plans for pandemics and other crises.
• Act as the medical incident commander for occupational health emergencies.
• Ensure the availability and medical efficacy of emergency supplies, including antidotes and vaccines.
• Lead the medical debrief and analysis following emergency drills or real incidents.
• Validate the medical components of the hospital's business continuity plan.
• Train key personnel on the medical management of mass casualty events within the workplace.

Data Analysis & Strategic Reporting

• Oversee the analysis of occupational health data (injury rates, illness trends, exposure incidents).
• Interpret complex health data to provide strategic recommendations to hospital leadership.
• Author comprehensive quarterly and annual reports on the state of employee health and program efficacy.
• Ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and security of all electronic occupational health records.
• Use data analytics to forecast health risks and justify proactive interventions.
• Benchmark the hospital's occupational health performance against international best practices.

Must have skills

Qualifications

• Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution
• Fellowship qualification in Family Medicine.
• Professional certification in Occupational Health Medicine.
• Board certification or equivalent in Occupational Medicine
• Valid medical license to practice.
• Expertise in workplace hazard control (chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, psychological)
• Advanced knowledge of occupational health regulations (OSHA, ISO 45001, ILO standards)
• Proficiency in disability case management and workers' compensation systems
• Experience with electronic health records and occupational health data analytics
• Knowledge of epidemiology and health surveillance methodologies
