Role Description
The Head of Treasury is a full-time, on-site role based in Lagos State, Nigeria with regular presence in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, responsible for managing the Bank's liquidity and treasury activities effectively by optimizing the deployment of surplus funds, managing banking and institutional relationships, monitoring market conditions and ensuring that treasury activities are conducted within approved liquidity, counterparty, concentration and investment limits. The role will provide informed treasury and liquidity recommendations to Management and ALCO while maintaining strict segregation between treasury dealing, approval, confirmation, settlement and accounting activities.
The Head of Treasury designs and implements treasury policies, supervises bank relationships, negotiates financing arrangements, and manages hedging strategies to mitigate market and currency risks. The role collaborates closely with finance, investment, and operations teams to support capital allocation decisions, optimize working capital, and align treasury activities with overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Treasury & Liquidity Management
Develop and execute treasury strategies in line with the Bank's approved business plan, liquidity position and ALCO directives.
Monitor the Bank's daily liquidity position, funding requirements and cash flow profile.
Manage the deployment of surplus liquidity through approved placements and permissible investments.
Maintain an appropriate maturity profile to ensure funds are available to meet the Bank's obligations as they fall due.
Monitor liquidity buffers and escalate emerging funding or liquidity pressures promptly.
Support the Bank in maintaining applicable regulatory liquidity and reserve requirements.
Money Market & Investment Management
Identify and evaluate suitable money market and permissible investment opportunities within the Bank's approved investment mandate.
Originate, price and negotiate placements with approved banks, financial institutions, asset managers and other authorised counterparties.
Monitor prevailing market rates and identify opportunities to optimise returns while preserving liquidity and capital.
Recommend placements and investments for approval in accordance with delegated authority and approved limits.
Ensure all proposed transactions comply with applicable regulatory requirements and the Bank's investment policy.
Counterparty & Relationship Management
Build and maintain strong relationships with banks, financial institutions, asset managers and other approved institutional counterparties.
Maintain current market intelligence on counterparty pricing, creditworthiness and market conditions.
Conduct appropriate counterparty assessments in collaboration with Risk and relevant control functions.
Ensure transactions are conducted only with approved counterparties and within established exposure limits.
Escalate any deterioration in counterparty standing or proposed limit exceptions immediately.
Asset-Liability & Funding Management
Monitor the Bank's asset and liability maturity profile and identify potential liquidity mismatches.
Work with Finance, Risk and Business teams to understand funding requirements and deposit trends.
Provide recommendations on liquidity deployment, funding strategy and deposit pricing to Management and ALCO.
Monitor the relationship between deposit growth, lending requirements, liquidity and treasury deployment.
Contribute to ALCO discussions on interest-rate, liquidity and funding risks.
Treasury Governance & Controls
Operate strictly within approved counterparty, tenor, concentration, investment and liquidity limits.
Ensure no treasury transaction is executed outside the approved mandate or delegated authority.
Maintain clear segregation between dealing, approval, confirmation, settlement and accounting functions.
Ensure all treasury transactions are properly documented, confirmed and independently settled.
Immediately report any unauthorised, unmatched or exceptional transaction to the appropriate authority.
Support internal and external audits and regulatory examinations relating to treasury activities.
ALCO & Management Reporting
Prepare treasury reports, market updates and liquidity analysis for ALCO and Management.
Provide regular reports on placements, investment performance, liquidity position, maturities and counterparty exposures.
Provide timely recommendations on treasury opportunities, market movements and emerging liquidity risks.
Support the preparation of treasury papers for the Board and relevant Board committees where required.
Maintain accurate records of all treasury decisions, approvals and transactions.
Team & Stakeholder Management
Provide guidance to the Treasury Officer responsible for treasury back-office activities.
Work closely with Finance, Risk, Operations and Business to ensure effective liquidity and treasury management.
Promote disciplined adherence to treasury policies, limits and control procedures.
Support the development of appropriate treasury processes, systems and reporting capabilities as the Bank grows.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field; a relevant professional certification (e.g.,CFA, ACA, ACCA or CIBN ) is an advantage.
An MBA, MSc or other relevant postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
Demonstrated expertise in Treasury Management and Cash Management, with the ability to design and oversee liquidity, funding, and bank relationship strategies.
Strong Finance knowledge combined with advanced Analytical Skills to interpret financial data, support investment decisions, and manage risk.
Experience with Hedging and related risk management tools to mitigate currency, interest rate, and market exposures.
Proven leadership abilities, including managing teams, setting priorities, and collaborating effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
Solid understanding of financial markets, banking products, and regulatory requirements, ideally within the Nigerian or broader African context.
High level of integrity, attention to detail, and proficiency in treasury and financial modeling tools (e.g., Excel, treasury management systems).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to senior leadership and investors.
Minimum of 15 years' relevant professional experience, with at least years 8 years in bank treasury, money markets, asset-liability management, investment management or a related financial services function.
Experience managing institutional banking relationships and money market placements is required.
Experience within a regulated banking or financial services environment, with a strong understanding of liquidity and treasury controls, is strongly preferred.
