We are seeking an experienced Well Planning Engineer to support the planning and technical preparation of drilling, completion, and well intervention activities within an upstream oil and gas environment.

The successful candidate will develop well concepts, basis of design, detailed well plans, execution strategies, schedules, cost estimates, and risk assessments, while coordinating multidisciplinary inputs to ensure wells are designed and prepared for safe, efficient, and reliable execution.

The role requires strong well planning and engineering expertise, sound technical judgment, and proven experience coordinating complex well planning activities across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop well concepts, Basis of Design (BoD), and detailed well plans for drilling, completion, and intervention activities.
  • Integrate subsurface targets, well trajectories, casing designs, completion requirements, logistics, and execution constraints.
  • Prepare well schedules, cost estimates, risk registers, execution strategies, and readiness plans.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary well planning reviews, technical workshops, and assurance activities.
  • Develop technical inputs for regulatory submissions, procurement specifications, tender documentation, and contracting activities.
  • Review technical deliverables and ensure well designs comply with applicable engineering standards and operational requirements.
  • Support well readiness activities and interface effectively with drilling, completions, subsurface, logistics, and operations teams.
  • Capture lessons learned from completed wells and incorporate improvements into future well designs and planning processes.
  • Identify technical, operational, cost, schedule, and execution risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • 8 - 12 years of relevant experience in the oil and gas industry, with strong upstream E&P exposure.
  • Proven experience in well planning, well design, drilling, completion, or well intervention engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience working in comparable upstream well planning and operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of well engineering principles, operational controls, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • IWCF/IADC certification is desirable.
  • Professional engineering membership or registration is desirable.
  • Other relevant professional or technical certifications will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate should demonstrate practical and recent experience in:

  • Well planning and well design.
  • Well trajectory and directional planning.
  • Casing and cementing design integration.
  • Completion and well intervention planning.
  • Integration of subsurface targets with well design and execution requirements.
  • Well risk assessment and risk mitigation.
  • Well cost and schedule estimation.
  • Well readiness and execution planning.
  • Technical assurance and engineering reviews.
  • Multidisciplinary well planning coordination.
  • Procurement specifications and technical contracting inputs.
  • Lessons learned and continuous improvement in well design.

  • Ensure well plans and technical programmes comply with approved standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and escalate technical, operational, well integrity, and execution risks.
  • Participate in relevant technical safety reviews, risk assessments, and assurance activities.
  • Stop or escalate unsafe work practices or conditions where identified.
  • Promptly report incidents, near misses, equipment defects, and abnormal operating conditions.
  • Maintain all required professional, safety, and role-specific certifications throughout the assignment.
