Responsibilities
Own technical architecture, system design, API contracts, and integration patterns.
Enforce Watu engineering standards: GitHub, PR reviews, coverage gates, OpenAPI documentation, and runbooks.
Represent the squad in platform architecture discussions and escalate crosssquad concerns.Delivery & Quality
Review and approve all pull requests, ensuring quality and compliance.
Define and maintain the squad’s Definition of Done.
Own release process, cadence, feature flag strategy, and rollback procedures.
Drive sprint planning with the Product Owner, flagging risks early.Partner & Vendor Governance
Govern external mobile development partners, ensuring architecture and code quality.
Review partner code and approve releases.People Management
Manage 3–5 direct reports (Backend, Frontend/Mobile, QA Engineers).
Provide daytoday unblocking, technical growth, and timely feedback.
Input into performance reviews and hiring decisions.
Model AInative engineering practices across the squad.Qualifications & CompetenciesEssential
Qualifications & Competencies
7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years as technical authority.
Strong Android development (adsbygoogle=window.adsbygoogle||[]).push({});background (Java/Kotlin).
Strong backend fundamentals: distributed systems, eventdriven architecture, API design, database design.
Experience in Agile/Scrum or Kanban environments.
Clear, direct communication skills.Strongly Preferred
Experience in fintech, payments, or digital financial services in Africa, LATAM, or APAC.
Experience governing external engineering partners.
Handson Java backend development.
Familiarity with eventdriven architecture and message brokers (Kafka or equivalent).Engineering Standards
All code in GitHub with mandatory peer review.
APIs documented with OpenAPI/Swagger; ADRs for significant decisions.
Secrets managed securely (AWS Secrets Manager or Vault).
