The Team Lead, Special Risks is responsible for the effective management, underwriting and administration of the Company's Special Risks portfolio. The role provides technical leadership in assessing complex and high-value risks, developing appropriate underwriting terms, ensuring adequate risk pricing and facilitating profitable portfolio growth in line with the Company's underwriting strategy, risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
The role will also provide guidance to underwriting team members, strengthen broker and client relationships, support business development initiatives and ensure that all Special Risks business is managed in accordance with approved policies, procedures and delegated underwriting authorities.
Key Responsibilities
Assess, analyse and underwrite complex and high-value risks within approved underwriting authority.
Review risk submissions, proposal forms, surveys, loss histories, financial information and other relevant documentation.
Determine the acceptability of risks based on the Company's underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
Develop appropriate policy terms, conditions, warranties, exclusions, deductibles and other risk mitigation measures.
Ensure that risks are appropriately classified, rated and priced to achieve adequate technical profitability.
Refer risks exceeding delegated authority to the appropriate approving authority.
Monitor the performance of the Special Risks portfolio against agreed business and profitability targets.
Analyse portfolio trends, loss ratios, premium growth, retention and other key underwriting indicators.
Identify emerging risks and recommend appropriate underwriting responses.
Review underperforming accounts and recommend corrective actions.
Assess the adequacy of risk management and loss prevention measures implemented by insureds.
Work closely with Risk Management, Claims and Reinsurance teams on complex risks.
Liaise with the Reinsurance team on facultative and treaty requirements for Special Risks.
Ensure risks requiring facultative reinsurance are referred promptly and appropriately.
Review facultative reinsurance terms and ensure that the Company's exposure is adequately protected.
Ensure compliance with treaty capacity, retention limits and reinsurance guidelines.
Support the development of new Special Risks business through brokers, agents, corporate clients and strategic partners.
Maintain strong professional relationships with key brokers, intermediaries and clients.
Participate in client and broker meetings, presentations and negotiations on complex risks.
Requirements:
First Degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, Business Administration or a related discipline.
Professional qualification in Insurance, preferably Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN).
Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in general insurance, preferably with substantial experience in underwriting.
Minimum of 3 years' experience in Special Risks, Corporate Underwriting, Energy, Engineering, Property, Marine or other complex commercial risks.
Demonstrable experience managing high-value and complex insurance risks.
Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is required.
Experience working with brokers, reinsurers and major corporate clients is highly desirable.
