The Supermarket Manager will be responsible for the overall day-to-day management and performance of the supermarket, ensuring efficient store operations, achievement of sales and profitability objectives, effective inventory management, excellent customer service, staff productivity, and adherence to established operational and control standards.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on retail professional with proven experience managing a supermarket, hypermarket, departmental store, or other notable retail store environment. He/she must have a strong understanding of supermarket operations, including merchandising, inventory management, procurement, stock receiving and reconciliation, point-of-sale operations, cash management, staff scheduling, customer service, loss prevention, store hygiene, and the use of retail management software.
The Manager will be expected to take ownership of the store\'s performance, identify operational gaps, implement improvements, and ensure that customers consistently receive a convenient, efficient, and satisfactory shopping experience.
Store Operations Management
- Oversee the overall daily operations of the supermarket.
- Ensure the store opens, operates, and closes in accordance with established procedures.
- Ensure all departments, including sales floor, cashiers, storekeeping, customer service, and support functions, operate efficiently.
- Ensure shelves, displays, product categories, and promotional areas are properly arranged and adequately stocked.
- Monitor store appearance, cleanliness, product presentation, lighting, signage, and general customer experience.
- Conduct daily store inspections and promptly address operational gaps.
- Ensure standard operating procedures are consistently followed.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce avoidable costs.
- Ensure equipment, facilities, refrigeration units, POS terminals, generators, and other store assets are properly maintained.
- Coordinate with relevant vendors and service providers when operational issues arise.
Sales & Commercial Performance
- Take direct responsibility for achieving the supermarket\'s sales targets.
- Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance.
- Analyse sales trends and identify opportunities to increase revenue.
- Develop initiatives to increase customer traffic, basket size, repeat purchases, and overall sales.
- Monitor performance of individual product categories and identify slow-moving or underperforming products.
- Work with management and suppliers on promotions, discounts, product displays, and other sales initiatives.
- Ensure promotional activities are properly implemented and monitored.
- Monitor competitors and provide management with relevant market intelligence.
- Recommend pricing, product, promotional, and merchandising strategies where appropriate.
- Prepare regular sales and performance reports for management.
Inventory & Stock Management
- Ensure effective management of the supermarket\'s inventory from ordering through to sale.
- Supervise stock receiving, inspection, documentation, storage, shelving, and stock rotation.
- Ensure appropriate FIFO/FEFO principles are applied where applicable.
- Monitor stock levels and ensure timely replenishment.
- Minimise stock-outs, overstocking, expiry, damage, shrinkage, and other forms of stock loss.
- Conduct and supervise regular stock counts and reconciliations.
- Investigate and report stock variances.
- Ensure damaged, expired, or near-expiry products are appropriately identified and managed.
- Monitor fast-moving and slow-moving products.
- Work closely with suppliers and procurement personnel to ensure timely replenishment.
- Maintain accurate inventory records using the supermarket\'s inventory/retail management system.
SHIFT & WORK SCHEDULE MANAGEMENT
The Supermarket Manager will operate within a rotational shift structure to ensure effective management of the store across operating periods.
- The Manager will rotate between morning and afternoon shifts based on the approved duty roster.
- The Manager must be available to supervise the store during assigned shifts and ensure proper handover between shifts.
- Shift handovers must include relevant information on sales performance, stock issues, customer complaints, operational incidents, cash/POS matters, staffing, and outstanding activities.
- The Manager is expected to demonstrate flexibility when operational requirements necessitate adjustments to the normal roster.
- Workdays and weekly off days will be determined by the approved operational roster.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor\'s Degree in Business Administration, Management, Marketing, Retail Management, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Professional qualifications in Retail Management, Supply Chain, Operations, or related fields will be an advantage.
- Minimum of 5 - 8 years\' relevant experience, with significant experience in supermarket or organised retail operations.
- Previous experience as a Supermarket Manager, Store Manager, Branch Manager, Retail Operations Manager, or equivalent is strongly preferred.
- Experience working in a well-established supermarket, hypermarket, departmental store, or notable organised retail business is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience managing frontline retail employees and multiple store functions.
- Proven experience in sales performance management, inventory control, merchandising, customer service, and loss prevention.
