Key Duties and Responsibilities
Initiate, monitor, and terminate hemodialysis treatments for acute and chronic renal patients in accordance with established clinical protocols
Assess patients pre, intra, and postdialysis, including vital signs, fluid balance, weight, and laboratory values
Cannulate and manage AV fistulas, grafts, and central venous dialysis catheters using strict aseptic techniques
Recognize and manage intradialytic complications such as hypotension, cramps, chest pain, and air embolisms
Operate, program, troubleshoot, and maintain hemodialysis machines and water treatment systems
Administer specialized renal medications including erythropoietin, iron infusions, anticoagulants, and IV therapies
Provide patient and family education on renal diet restrictions, medication adherence, and homecare protocols
Collaborate with nephrologists, medical officers, and nutritionists during multidisciplinary rounds
Maintain accurate nursing documentation including treatment flow sheets, care plans, and incident reports
Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control policies
Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and CME programs
Respond to medical emergencies within the unit and participate in shift roster and oncall coverage

Qualifications and Experience
Diploma in KRCHN or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution
Higher Diploma in Nephrology / Renal Nursing from a recognized institution in Kenya
Active registration and valid Annual Practising Licence from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK)
Minimum of 2–3 years’ clinical experience in a dedicated renal / dialysis unit within a Level 4–6 hospital
Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable
Demonstrated competence in operating modern hemodialysis machinery and interpreting renal panel labsCompetency

Advanced clinical and technical skills in nephrology care and extracorporeal therapies
Strong critical thinking and rapid decisionmaking during intradialytic crises
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with empathetic patient care
High ethical standards, professional integrity, and strict infection control adherence
