Senior Software Engineer

Living Goods

Nairobi, kenya

full-time

The Opportunity: Living Goods is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Global Software Engineering team in Nairobi. You will take technical ownership of a product area within the platform, lead a small team of engineers delivering it, and remain hands-on throughout. You will decide how the area is built and record why, break the work down and sequence it, review what the team produces, and grow the engineers around you - while taking the hardest parts of the implementation yourself. This is a senior individual-contributor role with team leadership attached, not a move out of engineering. We expect roughly seventy percent of your time to be spent building and thirty percent leading, and the balance will shift with what the team is carrying - but building never drops out of it. Technical Leadership Responsibilities: Set the technical direction for your product area: decide the architecture, write the design down before the first ticket is cut, and record the decisions and the reasoning behind them. Lead a team of two to four engineers - break work down, sequence it against real dependencies, and clear what is blocking other people before your own tasks. Use code review as the primary teaching instrument: raise the standard of what gets merged and leave the author better prepared for the next change. Mentor and grow mid-level Software engineers through pairing, structured feedback and handing over work that stretches them. Represent engineering with product managers, programme teams and Ministry of Health stakeholders - translating constraints into plans, and deadlines into honest scope conversations. Own the health of what your team ships: dependable CI, uneventful releases, test coverage where it earns its keep, and technical debt named openly rather than absorbed quietly. Contribute to hiring, technical onboarding and the engineering standards of the wider GSE team. Engineering Responsibilities: Design, develop and maintain the offline-first Android application used by community health workers and supervisors, where connectivity is intermittent and losing a record is not acceptable. Design and build FHIR-native backend services - Kotlin and Spring Boot batch jobs that generate work, score submissions and produce reports, alongside Node.js and TypeScript services for authentication and administration. Build and safeguard data integrity across devices: sync conflict resolution, append-only clinical records, provenance for every merge, and deterministic identity across systems. Protect the clinical and personal data the platform holds: least-privilege access, encryption in transit and at rest, an auditable change history, and compliance with Kenya's Data Protection Act and equivalent law in the countries we operate in. Extend the platform to serve multiple countries through configuration rather than forks, accommodating different health system hierarchies, roles, languages and programme rules. Carry features end to end - specification, implementation, review, release, and field support when something behaves unexpectedly on a device you have never held. Work with QA Engineers on validation and verification testing, and with product managers to translate complex requirements into workable software. Support Ministry of Health, county and programme end users on arising technical issues alongside the technical support team, resolving or escalating and following through to resolution. Log development activity in the task management system and report progress, milestones and blockers in team ceremonies. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 7+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years leading a team or serving as the senior engineer other developers depended on. Demonstrated depth in either the JVM (Kotlin or Java) or TypeScript and Node.js, with the willingness to work across both - our platform is not single-language and neither is this role. Proven track record of shipping and then maintaining production software: a mobile application with real users in the field, or backend services carrying meaningful load. Hands-on experience designing, developing and implementing fit-for-purpose digital solutions at scale, preferably in the digital health space. Strong relational data modelling, schema migration and API design, including integration techniques for reliable communication and data exchange between systems. Fluency with version control (Git), code review and CI/CD as daily practice. Use of project management tools such as JIRA and Confluence is strongly preferred. A track record of mentoring engineers, with specific examples you can talk through. Hands-on experience with open-source digital global goods such as FHIR/HL7, CHT, DHIS2, OpenMRS, OpenSRP, CommCare or OpenLMIS will be strongly preferred. Experience integrating large language model services, and messaging channels such as WhatsApp or SMS, is a plus. Skills and Competencies: Strong software design, development and implementation judgement, including familiarity with concepts such as MVC, ORM and RESTful APIs. Hands-on experience designing, building and testing mobile and web applications, and the backend services supporting them. Good knowledge of relational and non-relational database systems, and of cloud and containerised hosting environments. You write a design down before building it, and you can be argued out of a position by evidence. Sound judgement about when to build something properly and when to build it thin - and the habit of saying plainly which one you just did. Ability to work through ambiguity and deal with shifting priorities; Ministry requirements and programme realities change, sometimes late. Effective written and verbal communication, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders for brainstorming, designing and rolling out digital health solutions. Ability to hold a technical position with a stakeholder without turning it into a standoff. Strong customer service orientation, establishing good working relationships with users and passing on knowledge and experience to others. Genuine care that the software works for a health worker on a low-end phone with no signal, because that is who it is for. Working French is an advantage, for collaboration with our Burkina Faso programme.

Accelera Digital Group

Kenya, kenya

Full-Time

ADG is a global strategic technology firm that helps organisations scale intelligently, efficiently and securely. With teams across Africa, the Middle East and Europe, we combine world-class engineering with deep business understanding. We deliver transformation through three integrated models: advisory, implementation and managed services. This approach Product Manager About the Role We are looking for a sharp, technically fluent Product Manager to bridge the gap between our customers, our advisory team, and engineering, turning real-world client needs; for both our internal products and solutions we build for customers, into products that ships. This isn’t a role where you write specs and wait. You will dig into the technical weeds with engineers, work closely with our advisory team to understand what customers actually need, and use AI tools to move faster from insight to shipped feature. At times, you’ll step into the Product Owner seat on behalf of a customer who doesn’t have one; driving backlog and priorities directly for their engagement. You’ll also get hands-on, mocking up flows in Figma and building quick proof-of-concepts to make the product vision tangible before a single line of production code is written. If you’re excited about owning outcomes rather than outputs, translating messy customer requirements into clear priorities, and using AI as a genuine extension of how you work, this role is for you. Key Responsibilities Bridge Customer, Advisory & Engineering: Act as the connective tissue between our customers, our advisory team on the front lines, and the engineers building the solution, ensuring nothing gets lost in translation. Own Internal & Customer Roadmaps: Define and prioritise the product roadmap across our own internal products as well as active customer engagements, balancing strategic bets against near-term delivery commitments. Proxy Product Owner: Step in as the de facto Product Owner for customers who lack one, owning their backlog, prioritisation, and day-to-day product decisions on their behalf. Requirements Translation: Work directly with the advisory team and customers to turn technical and business requirements into clear epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria engineering can build from. Design & Rapid Prototyping: Mock up flows and screens in Figma, and build quick proof-of-concepts and clickable prototypes to demonstrate product vision, whether for an internal tool or a customer solution. Cross-functional Delivery: Partner closely with engineering to ship features end-to-end, unblocking teams and making fast, well-reasoned trade-off calls. Customer & Market Insight: Join customer conversations directly to identify gaps, validate solutions, and stay close to what customers actually need versus what they initially ask for. AI-Native Workflow: Use AI tools to accelerate research synthesis, spec writing, prototyping, and data analysis, and know where human judgment has to take over. Product Feedback Loop: Serve as the internal voice of the customer, feeding real field insight from the customer and advisory team back into engineering priorities, and back into how our own internal products evolve. What We’re Looking For Core Expertise Track Record: 5+ years of product management experience, ideally in enterprise B2B software or client-facing technical delivery. Product Owner Range: Comfortable operating as a Product Owner when needed, running backlog grooming, writing acceptance criteria, and making the calls a customer’s own Product Owner would normally make. Design & Prototyping: Hands-on experience in Figma (or similar), able to go from idea to clickable mockup or working POC without waiting on a designer or engineer. Technical Fluency: Comfortable reading architecture diagrams, understanding APIs and integrations, and holding your own in a conversation with engineers; you don’t need to write production code, but you need to understand what’s hard and why. Data-Driven Decision Making: Confident using data and experimentation to prioritise, validate hypotheses, and measure impact. AI Fluency: Genuine, daily use of AI tools in your workflow, not just familiarity, but a track record of using them to ship faster and think better, with a mindset of sharing to enable other colleagues to learn from your workflow. Stakeholder & Delivery Skills Executive Presence: Able to move seamlessly between a whiteboard session with engineers and a strategic conversation with a customer’s VP or CTO. Ownership & Bias to Action: High autonomy and grit; you invent solutions rather than waiting for direction. Communication: Exceptional written and verbal skills, with a track record of building trust across technical, advisory, and customer stakeholders alike. Range: Comfortable switching context between shaping our own internal products and driving priorities for customer engagements. Nice-to-Haves Experience in specialised domains relevant to our work (AI/ML products, Mobile, SaaS or other web-application technologies, distributed systems, etc.). Prior experience in a technical, high-touch client delivery environment: forward deployment, solutions engineering, consulting, or technical pre-sales adjacent roles. Formal certifications e.g. Product Owner certification (CSPO or equivalent) or hands-on Scrum/Agile ceremony experience. Background in financial services, payments, or FinTech, with an understanding of the sector’s security and regulatory demands. Experience using AI coding tools (e.g. Claude) to build functional POCs, specifications, etc. What Success Looks Like in Year 1 First 90 Days: Deeply understand our customer base, our advisory team’s workflow, and the engineering process; ship your first roadmap decision backed by real customer and advisory insight. 6 Months: Become the trusted go-to person for customers, advisory, and engineering, with a roadmap that’s respected by all three. 1 Year: Drive measurable customer outcomes through solutions that solve real problems, with a repeatable, AI-accelerated way of working baked into how the team operates. Forward-Deployed Engineer About the Role We are looking for a highly accomplished, deeply technical Senior Forward Deployment Engineer to serve as the dedicated technical engine and trusted advisor for a strategic enterprise client. Architecture & Integration: Work hands-on with the customer’s engineering, security, and infrastructure teams to design seamless deployment pipelines, custom integrations, and data flows, with a heavy emphasis on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environments. Real-time Technical Problem Solving: Unblock customer engineering teams by debugging complex deployment, infrastructure, integration, or performance issues on the fly. Product Feedback Loop: Serve as the direct bridge between the customer’s engineering requirements and our internal Product & Core Engineering teams, advocating for features that drive enterprise adoption. What We’re Looking For Technical Expertise Senior Engineering Track Record: 10+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, backend systems, cloud architecture, or site reliability engineering (SRE). Hands-on Coding: Strong proficiency in modern enterprise programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, TypeScript/Node.js, or even Rust or Golang). Cloud & Infrastructure Mastery: Deep experience with GCP cloud platform, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and modern CI/CD practices. Integration & Systems Design: Proven ability to architect REST/gRPC APIs, microservices, enterprise security integrations (SAML, OAuth, VPCs), and data pipelines. Client & Advisory Skills Executive Presence: Ability to switch effortlessly between white-boarding code with senior developers and presenting architectural strategies to CTOs and VP-level stakeholders. Technical Ownership: High autonomy, grit, and a strong sense of ownership: you don’t wait for answers; you invent solutions. Empathy & Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a track record of building deep trust with client engineering teams. Nice-to-Haves Experience in specialized domains relevant to our tech stack (e.g., AI/ML infrastructure, distributed systems, high-throughput data processing, or cybersecurity). Prior experience in forward deployment, technical pre-sales, or high-touch technical account management at a high-growth SaaS or deep-tech enterprise company. Track record working within financial services, payments, or the broader FinTech ecosystem, with a solid understanding of the sector’s unique security, regulatory, and high-transaction requirements. Experience with other cloud platforms like Azure, AWS and Huawei. What Success Looks Like in Year 1 First 90 Days: Build deep technical trust with the customer’s core technical team, fully understand their tech stack and architecture, and ship your first production integration or PoC. 6 Months: Become the indispensable go-to technical expert for the account, reducing time-to-value for new client initiatives and driving architectural alignment. 1 Year: Expand the customer’s technical footprint with our solutions through successful PoCs, seamless system stability, and proactive feature delivery. A Computer Science (or equivalent) degree, or significant proven industry experience. Proven, hands-on experience in designing, building, and deploying end-to-end ML pipelines into production environments. A deep and practical understanding of ML training processes, relevant machine learning algorithms (both classical and deep learning), and data preparation techniques. Strong knowledge of and practical experience with Generative AI (GenAI) technologies, LLMs, and related tooling. A go-getter attitude with a demonstrated ability to actively listen, understand complex business challenges, and design technical solutions that deliver ROI. Advanced proficiency in Python and solid experience with at least one major cloud provider (Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure). SDET / Test Engineer About the Role We are looking for a highly skilled SDET / Test Engineer to be the quality backbone for our software solutions. Someone who doesn’t just find bugs, but architects the automation frameworks and CI/CD gates that make quality first a reality across our client engagements. This isn’t a role where you write test cases and wait for a build. You will own test architecture end-to-end, write production-grade automation code alongside our engineers, and use AI tools to move faster from requirement to reliable, automated coverage. If you thrive at the intersection of deep technical testing skill, engineering rigor, and a relentless focus on system reliability, this role is for you. Key Responsibilities Test Architecture & Ownership: Design, build, and maintain scalable automation frameworks across UI, API, and integration layers, ensuring reliable, parallel, and fast-running test suites. Shift-Left Quality: Embed quality early in the SDLC; partnering with engineers during design and development, not just at the end of a sprint, to catch issues before they become expensive. CI/CD Integration: Build and maintain automated test pipelines (unit, integration, E2E, regression) that gate deployments and give the team confidence to ship continuously. Production-Level Contribution: Contribute real application code where needed, not just test code, understanding the system well enough to test it like an engineer who built it. Performance & Resilience Testing: Identify and test for bottlenecks under load, race conditions, and failure modes, especially for systems with strict uptime or regulatory requirements. AI-Accelerated Testing: Use AI tools to generate test scaffolding, analyse failures, identify coverage gaps, and speed up test maintenance while knowing where human judgment on risk and edge cases still has to lead. Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, product, and advisory teams to translate acceptance criteria into automated coverage, and to communicate risk and quality status clearly to non-technical stakeholders. What We’re Looking For Technical Expertise Automation Mastery: Strong hands-on experience with modern test automation tools (Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or similar) and frameworks (TestNG, JUnit, Cucumber). Programming Proficiency: Solid coding ability in Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or similar and comfortable writing production-quality code, not just scripts. API & Data Testing: Proven experience validating REST APIs, JSON payloads, and structured data across complex, multi-system workflows. CI/CD & DevOps Fluency: Practical experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar) and working with version control (Git). Systems Thinking: Ability to reason about concurrency, state management, and data integrity in complex backend systems, not just click-through UI testing. Engineering & Communication Skills Engineering Mindset: You approach testing as an engineering discipline; designing for maintainability, scalability, and speed, not just coverage for its own sake. Ownership & Autonomy: High autonomy and grit; you identify quality risks proactively rather than waiting to be told what to test. Communication: Able to clearly explain technical risk and quality trade-offs to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. Nice-to-Haves Experience in high-reliability, high-stakes domains; e-commerce, financial services, etc. Cloud platform experience (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and containerisation (Docker) for test environment management. Experience with performance/load testing tools (JMeter, k6, or similar) together with observability tooling. Exposure to AI-assisted test generation or self-healing test frameworks. Background contributing production code, not just test automation but also full-stack or backend development experience. What Success Looks Like in Year 1 First 90 Days: Understand our stack and client delivery model deeply; land your first meaningful automation framework improvement or CI/CD gate. 6 Months: Become the trusted quality authority across your project team, with automation coverage that catches real issues before they reach production. 1 Year: Drive measurable improvements in deployment confidence and speed through reusable frameworks, AI-accelerated test workflows across more than one client engagement. Head Of Engineering, Rewards

Moniepoint Group

Kenya, kenya

Full-time

Who we areMoniepoint Inc. is Africa’s all-in-one financial platform, helping 20 million businesses and individuals access seamless payments, banking, credit, cross-border, and business management tools each month. As Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer, we power most of the country’s point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through our subsidiaries, Moniepoint Inc. processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually. Why KenyaKenya is where our next chapter begins. Following our acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank, we're preparing to go live which means the people we hire here help build a business from its first day, not inherit one. How we execute in Kenya will shape how we approach every market we enter after it, making this one of the most consequential engineering mandates in the business right now. This is the natural extension of our mission: to drive financial inclusion, and help millions of business owners and individuals across the African continent achieve financial happiness and success. So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Rewards to join us in Kenya.About The RoleRewards is one of the most strategically important platforms at Moniepoint, and it is being built into a dedicated charter with its own engineering and product leadership. The platform sits at the centre of our retention strategy across a user base of approximately 23 million people.Today the platform does one thing: cashback. It works, but it has barely scratched the surface of what rewards can be, and the cashback product itself is not yet built to the depth it deserves. The ambition is to evolve it into a full rewards, retention, engagement and personalisation platform and to do that across the full 360 degrees of our network. That means rewards for our business customers, rewards for our consumer customers, and rewards for the sales agents who drive our distribution. Very few companies get to design this from close to a blank page at this scale. The Head of Engineering owns that platform end to end. You will inherit a team of nine engineers, including an Engineering Manager, and build the organisation out from there the current expectation is a minimum of three product units and upwards of 25 people, though the eventual shape is genuinely yours to define. Your first objective is to get the best possible performance out of the cashback product we already have. From there, you will work with Growth, Sales and Marketing to determine what we build for acquisition and retention, and roll it out across every customer we serve. This is a consumer-facing product engineering role, and that is the most important thing to understand about it. Rewards is won or lost on experimentation, personalisation, and the quality of the experience in a customer's hands. We are looking for a leader who has built and shipped direct-to-consumer products at scale, who is fluent in experimentation and A/B testing, and who has real depth in front-end and mobile engineering not a purely backend platform leader.Moniepoint runs a Domain CTO model. We view our Heads of Engineering as the CTO of their domain: you own the technical roadmap, the architecture, the delivery, and the organisation beneath you. You will have full autonomy over engineering strategy, architecture, hiring, operating cadence and roadmap trade-offs.You will report functionally to our Group CTO, with a dual reporting line into the Product leader for Rewards. That second line is a delivery relationship rather than a seniority one engineering and product are peers here, and you will build the team to full capacity together. Your responsibilities as Head of Engineering, Rewards includes:Owning the technical strategy, architecture and roadmap for the Rewards Platform end to end.Improving the performance, reliability and depth of the existing cashback product as an immediate first priority.Evolving cashback into a broader rewards, retention, engagement and personalisation platform serving business customers, consumer customers and sales agents.Building the engineering organisation from its current base - structuring product units, hiring engineers and Engineering Managers, and leading through those managers as the team scales.Establishing a strong experimentation culture: A/B testing, cohort analysis, and measurement that lets the team learn quickly what actually changes customer behaviour.Working closely with Growth, Sales and Marketing to translate acquisition and retention objectives into product and engineering initiatives.Owning the customer-facing experience of rewards across mobile and web, including how quickly and reliably customers receive what they have earned.Define architecture standards, engineering processes and quality metrics, and own the engineering health of the domain incidents, production defects, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and developer experience.Build the platform to serve customers across multiple geographies as Moniepoint expands.Partner with Product to define the rewards-specific metrics and OKRs that do not yet exist, and hold the team to them.Who You Are Direct-to-consumer product engineering at scale. You have built and shipped products used directly by large consumer audiences, and you understand what moves engagement and retention. This is the defining requirement of the role.Genuine front-end and mobile depth. You have led or personally built consumer-facing mobile and web experiences. A backend-only background, however strong, is not what this role needs.Experimentation and growth engineering. Hands-on experience running A/B tests, feature flagging, and measurement frameworks, and using the results to drive product decisions rather than to justify them.At least 5 years of experience managing managers leading an engineering organisation through other engineering leaders, not a single team.Hands-on technical leadership. You are still close to the code. We expect a meaningful proportion of hands-on engineering time and technical credibility with the engineers you lead.10+ years of overall software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams through growth phases.Comfort with our backend environment Java and Spring Boot and the ability to lead backend engineers credibly, even if it is not where your own depth sits.Experience building and scaling an engineering organisation from a small base, including hiring and developing Engineering Managers.Strong collaboration with commercial stakeholders growth, marketing and sales and the ability to translate business objectives into engineering work.Rewards, loyalty, gamification, personalisation or growth platform experience is a strong advantage but is not required.Fintech or payments experience is an advantage, not a requirement.Cultural AlignmentAs well, we assess every candidate across eight dimensions that define how great leaders operate at Moniepoint. We look for evidence of all eight throughout the process, not just in a single conversation.Customer Obsession: Build deep empathy for users. Solve problems intuitively, and fix root causes, not just tickets.Craft: Master the fundamentals. Reason from first principles, make trade-offs explicit, and raise the bar on quality.Systemisation: Turn repeating decisions into scalable mechanisms. Reduce cognitive load and raise engineering quality.Urgency: Move with disciplined speed. Act autonomously within scope, remove friction, and escalate risks early.Ownership: Treat the platform as your own. Take initiative across boundaries and follow through without reminders. No Ego: Put the mission first. Share credit, welcome debate, and never protect status over team outcomes.Candour: Surface uncomfortable truths and risks early. Intelligent failure is welcome; concealment is not.Integrity: Stay truthful and ethically consistent. Refuse toxic behavior. Performance without integrity is unacceptable. What Success Looks Like In The RoleThe existing cashback product performing measurably better faster, more reliable, and more compelling to customers.A credible rewards platform roadmap defined with Product, and the first initiatives beyond cashback shipped.A functioning experimentation practice, where the team ships, measures and learns on a short cycle. An engineering organisation built out from its current base, with a strong bench of Engineering Managers and senior engineers.Rewards established as a measurable contributor to retention and engagement across the customer base.Clear architecture standards and engineering processes in place across the product units. Why Join UsA rare blank page. The platform exists, but almost everything it could become is still ahead of it, and you will define what that is.Direct influence on retention across a base of roughly 23 million users, at one of the largest and fastest-growing digital banks in Africa.Full autonomy as the CTO of your domain, with the backing to build the organisation you think the problem needs.Be part of a mission-driven company expanding access to financial services for millions of businesses and individuals. What To Expect In The Hiring Process60 minute High level System Design round with one of our Engineering Managers.60 minute Panel Interview with 2 of our Head of Engineering leaders. 30 minutes focused on a technical deep dive into your CV and into a project or system you built in the past. 30 minutes focused on testing for leadership attributes.60 minute Stakeholder Management Round with one of our Product Heads/VPs, focused on your stakeholder management and collaboration skills with product and business.60 minute Technical round and Culture fit interview with our Co-founder & Group CTO (the hiring manager).Moniepoint is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and candidates.
