Job Role

  • The Plastics Engineer will be responsible for providing technical and engineering expertise across plastics manufacturing and production processes. The role will involve supporting product development, optimizing manufacturing processes, improving product quality, troubleshooting production challenges, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plastics Manufacturing & Process Engineering

  • Develop, implement, and optimize plastics manufacturing processes.
  • Monitor production processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing problems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Optimize machine settings, production parameters, cycle times, and material utilization.
  • Evaluate production efficiency and recommend process improvements.
  • Support the implementation of new manufacturing technologies and processes.

Materials & Product Development

  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate plastic materials for specific applications.
  • Support material selection, testing, and validation.
  • Participate in the development and modification of plastic products.
  • Work with design and production teams to improve product performance and manufacturability.
  • Conduct technical evaluations of raw materials and finished products.

Production & Equipment Support

  • Work closely with production teams to resolve technical and operational issues.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify causes of production downtime.
  • Support preventive and corrective maintenance initiatives.
  • Recommend equipment improvements, modifications, or replacements where necessary.
  • Ensure production equipment operates within required technical specifications.

Quality Assurance & Process Control

  • Establish and monitor appropriate process and product quality parameters.
  • Investigate quality defects and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis of production and quality problems.
  • Work with quality teams to improve product consistency.
  • Ensure production processes comply with applicable standards and specifications.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to reduce material wastage and production costs.
  • Implement lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor key production and engineering performance indicators.
  • Develop solutions to improve productivity, efficiency, and product quality.
  • Support automation and technology improvement initiatives where applicable.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate technical and production documentation.
  • Prepare engineering reports, process specifications, and technical recommendations.
  • Document process changes and improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on production performance and technical issues.
  • Ensure engineering procedures and technical records are properly maintained.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with production, quality assurance, maintenance, procurement, and commercial teams.
  • Provide technical support to management and production personnel.
  • Support supplier evaluations and technical discussions.
  • Participate in technical projects and cross-functional improvement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Minimum 5 - 10 years of relevant experience in the plastics manufacturing industry.
  • Direct experience in plastics manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of plastics processing and manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience in production optimization, quality control, and process improvement.
  • Experience working with plastics machinery and manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable quality, health, safety, and environmental standards.

Monitor production output, machine efficiency, waste, and downtime. Conduct basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and escalate complex issues to maintenance teams. Monitor machine alarms, identify abnormal operating conditions, and record faults and corrective actions. Support quality checks including film thickness/micron, width, roll weight, winding quality, and appearance. Ensure off-specification or rejected products are properly identified and segregated. Supervise operators, assistants, and helpers during assigned shifts. Allocate duties and ensure adherence to production procedures, discipline, safety, and housekeeping standards. Maintain accurate production and shift records covering output, waste, downtime, machine faults, and quality issues. Conduct clear shift handovers and communicate outstanding production, machine, or quality issues. Follow and enforce machine safety procedures and PPE requirements. Work closely with maintenance and production teams to resolve equipment and process issues. Maintain a good understanding of extrusion equipment, including extruders, motors, drives, heaters, sensors, pumps, cooling, and winding systems. Qualifications & Experience Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing/Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Polymer/Plastics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Previous work experience is not mandatory; recent graduates with strong technical aptitude are encouraged to apply. Previous exposure to plastic extrusion, cast film, blown film, stretch film, industrial machinery, PLC-controlled equipment, motors and drives, or industrial maintenance is an added advantage. Industrial attachment, internship, or academic project experience involving machinery, manufacturing, automation, or maintenance will be considered.
