Role Purpose

  • Reporting to the Senior Miller the purpose of the job is to ensure safe and efficient operation of grain milling equipment. Ensure optimal setting of the grain cleaning equipment and grinding process to achieve the intended extraction rate. Perform basic troubleshooting and maintain a clean and safe work area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Production Planning

  • Ensure timely execution of production plans
  • Ensure adherence to production plan and schedules
  • Increase product availability by reviewing and replenishing the FG Kanban
  • Ensure timely posting of bulk flour in SAP as per SLA with key stake holders
  • Build relations with the sales team for prompt communication on sales order

Implement Food Safety objectives

  • Enhance customer experience through production of conforming products
  • Maintain GMPs above 90%
  • Ensure compliance to legal/regulatory requirements
  • Implement Quality Plan and other food safety programs

Grain Cleaning Process

  • Ensure operational excellence by Maintaining equipment efficiencies
  • Ensure optimal water addition for the wheat grain
  • Ensure adequate lying time for wheat and Maize
  • Maintain hourly transfer target for wheat at 14MT/hr and Maize 8.5MT/Hr
  • Ensure optimal separation of screenings
  • Ensure proper handling and mixing of screenings into by-product

Optimize Grain Conversion

  • Maintain set extraction rates and other milling efficiencies
  • Monitor milling cost and optimize wheat grist
  • Investigate process losses and take prompt corrective actions
  • Adhere to Product Specifications

Pest Management

  • Adopt the best industrial practice by maintaining proper hygiene levels
  • Ensure proper Sanitation of equipment through the deep cleaning process
  • Conduct equipment and process inspection for traces of infestation
  • Ensure AM and PM support in regard to equipment maintenance-Improve access to hidden areas

Flour Transfer Process

  • Managing the flour transfer process from Wheat mill to Packing lines
  • Work with the Packing Supervisor on the Packing schedule and ensure availability of flour in the packing lines as per the production plan

Maintenance Programs

  • Adopt the best industrial practice by maintaining proper working integrity of the milling equipment
  • Conduct routine equipment inspection
  • Conduct Autonomous Maintenance and AM awareness trainings - Tagging and un tagging of abnormalities
  • Conduct Condition Based Maintenance activities
  • Ensure support for Planned Maintenance; Roll change, sifter maintenance, servicing drives Maintain the process flow as per mill design from the available flow charts
  • Maintain the working integrity of MCC and PLC. Enhance employee training on PLC
  • Maintain the working integrity of process scales
  • Ensure Interlock system for the process is working with no bypass
  • Use available manuals for interpretation of errors
  • Implement Production plan and schedules

Continual Improvement Initiatives

  • Improve operational efficiencies through PaTaMu
  • Identify process challenges & use PDCA to address bottlenecks
  • Enhance employee competences through trainings
  • Conduct HK Reviews for reportees by reviewing strategies against performance. Participate in the monthly HK Reviews with the Head Miller
  • Support activities around Unga's culture code - FIRST.
  • Participate in organizing site events and initiatives as guided.
  • Enhance employee safety through trainings
  • Ensure adherence and compliance to safety requirements

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering or its equivalent
  • Diploma / Advanced Certificate in Milling Technology
  • Minimum three years of experience in the milling industry
  • Computer proficiency in MS. Office
  • Possess good communication skills.
  • Supervisory skills

In Kenya, Heifer has implemented programs focused on animal development, dairy and agricultural market systems, climate resilience, and institutional capacity strengthening. The Farmer Visibility Project seeks to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers by improving access to digital financial services, markets, and data-driven service delivery. The project will support farmers to participate in the digital economy, increase use of Farmer Cards and digital transactions, and strengthen a digitally enabled ecosystem involving cooperatives, financial institutions, suppliers, youth entrepreneurs, and other market actors. The baseline study will establish an evidence base to support adaptive implementation, learning, and accountability for the FaVi project. The study will assess digital and financial literacy, financial inclusion, service use, market access, ecosystem actors, service delivery processes, and data systems. Scope of work The consultancy will cover a rapid baseline study in Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, and Nandi Counties. The assignment will assess the current state of farmer participation in the digital economy, the availability and use of digital financial services, and the effectiveness of digitally enabled dairy value chain systems. The study will involve smallholder dairy farmers, with attention to women and youth, youth entrepreneurs, dairy cooperatives, input suppliers, dairy processors, feed millers, banks, and other relevant market actors. Key responsibilities The consultant or consultancy firm will be expected to: Design and deliver the baseline study in line with the project’s Market Systems Development approach. Prepare an inception report that includes the methodology, analytical framework, work plan, and tools. Conduct a literature review and develop data collection instruments. Propose sampling methods and representative sample sizes. Recruit, train, and supervise enumerators. Oversee data collection using Heifer’s SurveyCTO platform. Deliverables The expected deliverables are: Inception report, maximum 15 pages, submitted one week after contract signing. Duration The consultancy will be conducted over 15 days and is expected to take place in July 2026. Required qualifications Applicants should demonstrate: Master’s degree in Statistics, Research, Social Sciences, Agriculture, Monitoring and Evaluation, or a related field. At least 10 years of experience in international development, including at least 5 years conducting research or evaluations for development projects.
