Role Overview

  • Visco Group of Companies Limited is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to lead its laboratory operations as Head of Laboratory. This role is critical to ensuring accurate diagnostics, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and the continuous improvement of laboratory services.
  • The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with leadership capability, maintaining the highest standards of quality assurance, biosafety, and ethical laboratory practice while effectively managing people, processes, and resources.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Leadership & Operations

  • Provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for all laboratory activities.
  • Supervise laboratory personnel, allocate duties, manage shifts, and ensure smooth workflow.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Technical & Diagnostic Functions

  • Perform, supervise, and review routine and specialized laboratory tests across:
  • Hematology
  • Microbiology
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Parasitology
  • Serology
  • Urinalysis
  • Validate, authorize, and release test results with strict accuracy and timeliness.

Quality, Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with MLSCN, NCDC, and all relevant regulatory and professional standards.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Lead Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs, including internal audits and external quality assessments.
  • Maintain biosafety standards and ensure a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory environment.

Equipment & Inventory Management

  • Oversee equipment installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor reagent usage and consumables, ensuring timely procurement to prevent shortages.

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Prepare and submit regular laboratory reports (operational, QC, incident, and compliance reports) to management.
  • Work closely with clinicians, management, and other departments to support effective patient care and organizational objectives.

Training & Development

  • Train, mentor, and support the professional development of laboratory staff.
  • Ensure staff competency aligns with evolving laboratory standards and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS).
  • Valid and current practicing license from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
  • Minimum of 2 - 3 years post-NYSC experience.
  • Strong technical competence across major laboratory units.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and team management skills.
  • High level of integrity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively manage laboratory personnel, equipment, inventory, and workflows.
