Our client, a manufacturer situated in Eikenhof (Johannesburg South) is looking for a Mechanical Draughtsman with tool design experience. A strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal, welding, composites). Ability to design tooling that is practical, robust, and easy to fabricate.We are seeking a skilled Draftsman to take ownership of developing production tooling, jigs, fixtures, and manufacturing aids used throughout the manufacturing and assembly process. This individual will ensure that all tooling is safe, durable, repeatable, ergonomically sound, and contributes to improved quality and production efficiency. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical design ability, practical manufacturing knowledge, and a continuous-improvement mindset. This role reports to the Engineering ManagerTooling & Jig Design:Design production jigs, fixtures, templates, gauges, and assembly tooling for metal, composite, and mechanical assemblies.Ensure tooling designs maintain tight tolerances, support repeatability, and comply with engineering requirementsProduce accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, and full fabrication documentationCollaboration & Integration with Production:Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, and Assembly teams to understand tooling needs and workflow constraintsParticipate in design reviews and collaborate to refine tooling concepts.Support prototype builds and production trials of new toolingQuality & Continuous Improvement:Develop tooling that reduces variation, prevents assembly errors, and improves production consistencyUpdate existing tooling based on feedback, wear evaluations, and NCRs.Documentation & Control:Maintain accurate tooling drawings and revision control within the company’s PDM systemProduce clear assembly instructions and bill of materials (BOMs) for all tooling designsEnsure drawings comply with company and industry standards, regulations, and specific project requirements.Essential requirements:N4/N5 or higher in drafting, engineering, or related field.2 Years of experience in drafting, mechanical design, or tooling/jig design (aerospace or automotive industry preferred).Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal, welding, composites)Ability to design tooling that is practical, robust, and easy to fabricateExcellent attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality workGood at communicating written technical informationKnowledge of drafting standards and techniquesHands-on mechanical aptitude and ability to prototype concepts when neededPreferred Skills:Experience in high-precision manufacturing industriesExposure to PDM systems, or production documentation workflows.Understanding of lean manufacturing principles
