Computer literacy. Familiarity with public libraries, practical experience as part of the academic programme. Descriptors: General subject knowledge as well as very good knowledge of reference tools, and literature in general. Excellent communication skills and a sound understanding of Reference Interview technique. Has developed some proficiency in the discipline. Core Functions / Characteristics : Applies a body of theoretical knowledge within the Library and Information Services discipline. Performs functions to assist in the provision of a comprehensive public library service. Assists the public in meeting their reading, reference and information needs and enquiries at a high level. Conducts in-depth information searches/research. Assists with circulation control functions. Implements outreach programmes and activities. Assists in the development of the collection of library materials and services. Assists in the management of a library and/or specific service e.g. children's services.
