The overall purpose of this role is to provide expert cardiac care to in-patient and out-patient cardiac patients, including diagnostic and interventional procedures, in line with established clinical protocols and the hospital's patient care objectives. The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to manage complex cardiology cases and drive continuous improvement in cardiac care

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out patient assessment, treatment and stabilization and other specialized procedures to provide curative services in line with established protocols;
  • Provide high-quality, patient-centred care by performing advanced interventional cardiology procedures in accordance with clinical guidelines and governance standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-procedural assessments, including patient evaluation, risk stratification, review of investigations and imaging, and appropriate case selection and planning.
  • Perform and interpret cardiac investigations, including ECGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, and cardiac catheterization studies, to support diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Perform interventional cardiology procedures, including coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and other catheter-based procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Manage acute and complex cardiovascular conditions, including acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and heart failure.
  • Provide comprehensive post-procedural care, including monitoring recovery, identifying and managing complications, follow-up, and patient education.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, medical officers, nurses, and other multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
  • Refer patients for surgical or other specialist intervention when clinically indicated and participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Participate in clinical audits, case reviews, quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management initiatives within the Cardiology Department
  • Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of clinical protocols, standards, and interventional cardiology services.
  • Educate and counsel patients and their families on cardiovascular disease management, risk-factor modification, secondary prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Provide clinical supervision, training, and mentorship to medical officers, interns, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records and prepare clinical, medical, and management reports as required.
  • Maintain continuous professional development through relevant training, conferences, professional forums, and review of current medical literature.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Postgraduate Certification/Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in Cardiology.
  • Master of Medicine degree in in Internal Medicine from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from a recognized institution.
  • Must be registered by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council and hold a valid practicing license.
  • At least five (5) years of post-graduate experience of Cardiology.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of practice in Interventional Cardiology
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
