Job Summary

  • The Indirect Taxation Analyst is responsible for providing strategic tax advisory and compliance support across all Company entities, with a primary focus on VAT, Withholding Tax (WHT), staff income taxes, tax audits, regulatory engagement, and indirect tax matters arising from contracts and commercial transactions.
  • The role ensures compliance with applicable Federal and State tax laws, minimizes tax and reputational exposure, supports accurate and timely tax filings and remittances, and maintains effective relationships with tax authorities, auditors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Advisory & Transaction Support:

  • Provide strategic indirect tax advice to Company entities and business functions on contracts, transactions, and projects with tax implications.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Contracts & Procurement, Finance, Accounting, HR, and Technical teams on tax-related matters.
  • Review tax clauses in contracts and provide recommendations to ensure commercially sound and tax-compliant agreements.
  • Advise relevant stakeholders on current and potential future indirect tax implications.
  • Maintain and update the Company's Indirect Tax Matrix in line with changes in tax legislation, regulations, and fiscal policies.

Tax Compliance & Reporting:

  • Supervise the preparation and timely filing of VAT and WHT returns with relevant Federal and State tax authorities.
  • Ensure timely computation, payment, and remittance of applicable taxes and statutory levies.
  • Support compliance with staff income tax obligations and statutory filing deadlines.
  • Review tax computations and implementation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare responses to queries arising from tax returns, assessments, and audits.
  • Apply for and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs) for all Company entities.

Regulatory & Audit Management:

  • Coordinate periodic external and regulatory tax audits, including engagements with NEITI, NRS, SIRS, NDDC, and other relevant authorities.
  • Liaise with NUPRC, NDDC, NRS, SIRS, and other regulatory bodies regarding the Company's tax and fiscal obligations.
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of required tax documentation, payment evidence, and remittance records.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to regulatory and tax authority queries.
  • Support the Company's obligations where it acts as a fiscal agent of the Government.

Vendor & Tax Records Management:

  • Coordinate tax-related relationships with vendors, particularly regarding WHT deductions and WHT Credit Notes.
  • Ensure vendors receive appropriate tax documentation and credit notes within applicable timelines.
  • Work with Accounting to maintain accurate vendor master data and tax information.
  • Retrieve, verify, and maintain records of Revenue Receipts issued by tax authorities and government agencies.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of tax payments, remittances, receipts, and supporting documentation.

Internal Stakeholder Support:

  • Provide guidance to HR on the computation, payment, and statutory compliance requirements for staff income taxes.
  • Direct and support Accounting teams in the timely payment of indirect taxes and maintenance of tax-related records.
  • Collaborate with Treasury to support optimal cash-flow and funds utilization for tax obligations.
  • Provide timely tax guidance to business units and other internal stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure full and timely compliance with VAT, WHT, staff income taxes, and applicable statutory levies.
  • Minimize the Company's tax, financial, legal, and reputational exposure.
  • Maintain an accurate and current Indirect Tax Matrix for all Company entities.
  • Ensure timely filing, payment, and remittance of applicable taxes.
  • Maintain complete and auditable records of tax returns, remittances, receipts, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Effectively manage relationships with tax authorities, regulators, auditors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure timely resolution of tax queries, assessments, and audit findings.
  • Support tax-efficient structuring and implementation of contracts and commercial transactions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Possess a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Taxation, or a related discipline, or equivalent qualification with a minimum of 6 years' post-graduation experience in Tax, Accounting, or related functions.
  • Professional accounting / tax certification such as ICAN or ACCA is required.
  • Strong experience in Nigerian tax compliance and indirect taxation.
  • Sound knowledge and practical understanding of Nigerian Federal and State tax laws.
  • Knowledge of tax treaties and Multilateral Tax Agreements is an advantage.
  • Experience dealing with government tax authorities, regulatory bodies, and external auditors is highly desirable.
