About the role

• The Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBGYN) and Surgery Department provides clinical and administrative leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
• This includes leadership in clinical standards, governance, medical staffing, and departmental integration within the hospital's broader systems.

Responsibilities

• Set, maintain, and audit standards of clinical care, patient safety, and governance across the department.
• Ensure practice is delivered by appropriately registered and licensed staff as per regulatory, audit, and accreditation requirements.
• Organize medical staffing, rotas, clinics, and ward cover to ensure continuity and quality of care.
• Lead the diagnosis and management of complex cases, providing senior clinical decision-making and oversight for referrals.
• Supervise, mentor, appraise, and support the development of consultants, medical officers, and trainees.
• Ensure effective interface with other clinical departments, diagnostics, pharmacy, nursing, and managed-care/HMO processes.
• Contribute to service planning, resource management, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
• Participate in relevant hospital committees and represent the department in clinical and management forums.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) from a recognized institution.
• Completion of the required national housemanship/internship and NYSC, or a valid exemption where applicable. A registrable postgraduate specialist qualification (Fellowship) in the relevant discipline.
• Minimum of 8-10 years of post-fellowship specialist experience in the relevant discipline, including at least 2 years in a departmental leadership or supervisory role.
• Substantial post-fellowship experience as a specialist in the relevant discipline.
• Demonstrable experience leading or coordinating a clinical team or unit.
• Experience in clinical governance, quality assurance, audit, and the supervision and appraisal of medical staff.

Required skills:

• Strong knowledge of obstetrics & gynaecology and paediatrics practices across the patient pathway.
• Ability to lead clinical teams and organize medical staffing, clinics, and ward cover.
• Sound understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, audit, and quality assurance.
• Ability to manage complex presentations and provide senior clinical decision-making.
• Effective communication, teaching, and supervisory skills.
• Effective working relationships with diagnostics, pharmacy, nursing, allied health, and managed-care functions.

Nice to have:

• Additional sub-specialty training or certification relevant to the discipline.
• Membership of relevant specialty associations or faculties.
