About the role

• To provide clinical and administrative leadership of the family medicine and internal medicine department, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care across out-patient, in-patient and referral services.
• The Head of Department is accountable for clinical standards, governance, the organisation of medical staff, and the integration of the department's services with the wider hospital and managed-care arrangements.

Responsibilities

• Set, maintain and audit standards of clinical care, patient safety and governance across the family medicine and internal medicine department, ensuring practice is delivered by appropriately registered and licensed staff in line with regulatory, audit and accreditation requirements.
• Organise medical staffing, rotas, clinics and ward cover to ensure continuity and quality of care.
• Lead the diagnosis and management of complex cases, providing senior clinical decision-making and referral oversight.
• Supervise, mentor, appraise and support the development of consultants, medical officers and trainees.
• Ensure effective interface with other clinical departments, diagnostics, pharmacy, nursing and managed-care/HMO processes.
• Contribute to service planning, resource management and quality-improvement initiatives within the department.
• Participate in relevant hospital committees and represent the department in clinical and management forums.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) from a recognised institution.
• A registrable postgraduate specialist qualification (Fellowship) in the relevant discipline.
• Minimum of 8-10 years of post-fellowship specialist experience in the relevant discipline, including at least 2 years in a departmental leadership or supervisory role.
• Substantial post-fellowship experience as a specialist in the relevant discipline.
• Demonstrable experience leading or coordinating a clinical team or unit.
• Experience in clinical governance, quality assurance, audit and the supervision and appraisal of medical staff.
• Experience working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver family medicine and internal medicine services in a hospital setting.
• Experience preparing for or responding to regulatory, quality, audit or accreditation reviews affecting clinical services.

Required skills:

• Strong knowledge of family medicine and internal medicine practice across the patient pathway.
• Ability to lead clinical teams and to organise medical staffing, clinics and ward cover.
• Sound understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, audit and quality assurance.
• Ability to manage complex presentations and to provide senior clinical decision-making.
• Effective working relationships with diagnostics, pharmacy, nursing, allied health and managed-care functions.
• Effective communication, teaching and supervisory skills.
