Reports To: Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer
- We are seeking an exceptionally experienced Group Head of Human Resources to provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of the Group's Human Resources function.
- The successful candidate will be the highest-ranking HR professional within the organization, providing leadership and direction to HR Managers, HR personnel, and related people-management functions across the Group.
- This is a Group-level leadership position, not an HR Manager role. The successful candidate will oversee HR Managers and HR teams, establish Group-wide HR structures, standards, policies, and systems, and ensure that the HR function operates in a coordinated, professional, and effective manner.
- The role will focus on strengthening organizational structure, HR systems and processes, staff management and accountability, recruitment and training, performance management, employee relations, and workforce planning to support the organization's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Group HR Leadership:
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Group's Human Resources function.
- Serve as the Group's highest-level HR authority, providing direction and oversight to HR Managers, HR Officers, and other HR personnel.
- Supervise, guide, and hold HR Managers and HR teams accountable for effective delivery of their responsibilities.
- Establish Group-wide HR standards, policies, procedures, and practices.
- Ensure consistency in the application of HR policies and practices across the organization.
- Advise the Managing Director and senior management on significant people, workforce, and organizational matters.
- Develop and implement an HR structure capable of supporting the organization's present and future growth.
Organizational Structure & Development:
- Review the existing organizational structure and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Establish clear reporting lines, roles, responsibilities, and levels of authority.
- Develop HR systems and processes that promote structure, accountability, and efficiency.
- Assess staffing requirements and advise management on workforce planning.
- Develop succession planning, career progression, and leadership development structures.
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving organizational effectiveness and staff productivity.
- Ensure the HR structure evolves in line with organizational growth and business objectives.
Recruitment & Workforce Planning:
- Provide overall oversight of recruitment across the Group.
- Ensure recruitment processes are properly structured, consistent, and aligned with organizational requirements.
- Approve and oversee senior and critical recruitment where appropriate.
- Ensure the organization has the right number and calibre of employees to meet operational needs.
- Develop workforce plans in conjunction with management and departmental heads.
- Oversee onboarding, probation, confirmation, promotion, transfers, and employee exits.
- Establish appropriate processes for attracting, selecting, and retaining high-quality employees.
Training, Professional Development & CPD:
- Establish the Group's overall training and employee development strategy.
- Identify organizational and departmental training needs.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of annual training programmes.
- Ensure employees receive appropriate professional development and skills training.
- Oversee CPD, professional examinations, certifications, and other relevant development programmes.
- Evaluate training programmes and ensure training expenditure delivers meaningful organizational value.
- Develop career development and succession programmes for key employees.
Performance Management & Accountability:
- Establish and oversee a Group-wide performance management system.
- Ensure employees have clear responsibilities, objectives, and performance expectations.
- Oversee staff appraisal and performance review processes.
- Work with departmental heads and HR Managers to address performance concerns.
- Establish appropriate processes for managing underperformance and disciplinary matters.
- Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, and responsibility.
Employee Relations & Working Conditions:
- Provide overall leadership on employee relations across the Group.
- Ensure employee concerns and workplace issues are handled appropriately and consistently.
- Monitor working conditions and recommend improvements where necessary.
- Establish procedures for grievances, disciplinary matters, and workplace disputes.
- Promote a professional, respectful, and productive working environment.
- Ensure employees understand organizational policies, standards, and expectations.
HR Policies, Systems & Compliance:
- Develop, review, and implement comprehensive HR policies and procedures.
- Ensure HR practices comply with applicable Nigerian employment and labour laws.
- Establish proper systems for employee records, contracts, personnel documentation, and HR reporting.
- Ensure appropriate controls are in place for confidential employee information.
- Oversee compliance with statutory obligations relating to employment, PAYE, pension, and other employee-related requirements.
- Regularly review HR practices and recommend improvements to management.
Compensation & Employee Benefits:
- Provide oversight of the Group's compensation and benefits structure.
- Review salary structures and make recommendations to management.
- Oversee the administration of employee benefits, including health insurance, pension, and other benefits.
- Ensure compensation and benefits structures are properly documented and consistently administered.
- Support management in developing appropriate reward and retention strategies.
Senior Management Advisory:
- Serve as the principal HR adviser to the Managing Director and senior management.
- Provide professional advice on workforce planning, employee relations, organizational structure, succession, and other people-related matters.
- Provide management with regular reports on HR activities, workforce issues, and organizational needs.
- Identify HR-related risks and recommend appropriate actions.
- Participate in senior management discussions involving people, organizational structure, or workforce matters.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Must currently reside in Lagos, Nigeria.
- Must be willing to permanently relocate from Lagos to Abuja.
- Minimum of 10 years of extensive professional HR experience.
- Substantial experience serving as Head of Human Resources or leading the entire HR function of a reputable organization or group.
- Demonstrable experience leading, supervising, and providing direction to HR Managers and other HR personnel.
- Proven record of developing and implementing organizational HR structures, policies, and systems.
- Relevant academic qualification in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
- Relevant professional HR certifications and qualifications, with certificates available for verification.
- Extensive experience in organizational development, recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training and development, compensation and benefits, HR compliance, and workforce planning.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian employment and labour laws and HR best practices.
- Demonstrated experience advising senior management on significant HR and organizational matters.
- Strong leadership and people-management ability.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and organizational skills.
- Ability to establish structure, enforce accountability, and lead HR teams across an organization.
- Ability to handle highly confidential employee, management, and organizational information with discretion.
