JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced, commercially minded, and customer-focused Hotel General Manager to oversee the overall operations and performance of our hotel in Aba, Abia State.

The General Manager will have overall responsibility for the hotel\'s day-to-day operations, financial performance, guest satisfaction, service standards, employee performance, sales and revenue growth, compliance, and overall profitability.

The successful candidate will provide strong leadership across all hotel departments, ensuring that the property operates efficiently while consistently delivering excellent guest experiences and achieving the hotel\'s business objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

HOTEL OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the hotel\'s daily operations.
  • Coordinate and supervise all hotel departments, including:

GUEST EXPERIENCE & CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Ensure guests receive professional, efficient, and courteous service throughout their stay.
  • Monitor guest satisfaction, complaints, feedback, and online reviews.
  • Personally attend to major guest complaints and VIP guests when necessary.
  • Establish effective procedures for handling and resolving guest complaints.
  • Monitor check-in, check-out, room allocation, housekeeping, F&B, and other guest touchpoints.
  • Develop initiatives to improve guest satisfaction, repeat business, and customer loyalty.
  • Ensure all employees understand and consistently apply the hotel\'s service standards.

REVENUE & PROFITABILITY MANAGEMENT

  • Take overall responsibility for the hotel\'s financial and commercial performance.
  • Develop strategies to increase room occupancy, average daily rate (ADR), food and beverage revenue, and other income.
  • Monitor occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, room revenue, F&B revenue, and departmental profitability.
  • Work closely with Sales, Reservations, Front Office, and Finance to maximize revenue.
  • Monitor room rates and ensure appropriate pricing strategies are implemented.
  • Review daily, weekly, and monthly revenue reports.
  • Identify opportunities to increase revenue while controlling operating costs.
  • Ensure effective cost-control measures are implemented across the hotel.

BUDGET & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Work with the Chief Accountant/Finance Manager to prepare the hotel\'s annual operating budget.
  • Monitor actual performance against budget.
  • Review daily revenue and financial reports.
  • Monitor payroll, procurement, utilities, inventory, food costs, beverage costs, and other operating expenses.
  • Ensure departmental heads operate within approved budgets.
  • Investigate significant variances and implement corrective measures.
  • Work with Finance to improve cash-flow management and profitability.
  • Ensure proper controls are maintained over hotel revenue and expenditure.

SALES & MARKETING

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase hotel occupancy and revenue.
  • Lead the hotel\'s sales and business development activities.
  • Build relationships with corporate organizations, government agencies, travel companies, event planners, and other potential clients.
  • Develop corporate account and group booking opportunities.
  • Monitor local market and competitor activities in Aba.
  • Support digital marketing, social media, online travel agency (OTA), and direct-booking initiatives.
  • Ensure the hotel is effectively positioned within the Aba hospitality market.
  • Review sales performance against targets and implement corrective strategies.

FRONT OFFICE & RESERVATIONS

  • Ensure efficient front desk and reservations operations.
  • Monitor room availability, reservations, cancellations, no-shows, walk-ins, and group bookings.
  • Ensure accurate guest registration and billing procedures.
  • Monitor room allocation and upgrade practices.
  • Ensure proper handling of guest information and cash transactions.
  • Review daily occupancy and room revenue reports.
  • Ensure effective coordination between Front Office and Housekeeping.

FOOD & BEVERAGE OPERATIONS

  • Oversee restaurant, bar, banquet, room service, and other F&B operations.
  • Ensure high standards of food quality, hygiene, presentation, and service.
  • Monitor food and beverage costs and wastage.
  • Work with the Executive Chef/F&B Manager to develop menus and improve profitability.
  • Monitor restaurant and bar sales performance.
  • Ensure proper stock control and inventory procedures.
  • Develop strategies to increase F&B revenue through events, promotions, corporate functions, and other initiatives.

HOUSEKEEPING & HOTEL PRESENTATION

  • Ensure guest rooms and public areas are maintained to required standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of rooms, corridors, public areas, and back-of-house facilities.
  • Monitor room cleanliness and maintenance issues.
  • Ensure effective linen, laundry, amenities, and housekeeping inventory control.
  • Work closely with Engineering to ensure maintenance issues are resolved promptly.
  • Monitor housekeeping productivity and staffing levels.

HUMAN RESOURCES & STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and supervision to hotel employees.
  • Work with HR to recruit and retain competent employees.
  • Ensure proper induction and training of new employees.
  • Establish clear performance expectations for departmental heads and staff.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and management meetings.
  • Address employee performance and disciplinary matters in accordance with hotel policies.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, discipline, accountability, and excellent customer service.
  • Identify training needs and develop staff development initiatives.

SECURITY, SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure the safety and security of guests, employees, property, and hotel assets.
  • Work closely with the Chief Security Officer/Security Manager to maintain effective security procedures.
  • Ensure proper monitoring of CCTV, access control, parking, and other security systems.
  • Establish procedures for emergencies, fire incidents, medical emergencies, theft, and other security situations.
  • Ensure fire safety equipment and emergency procedures are regularly inspected.
  • Ensure incidents are properly documented and reported.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with relevant emergency and security authorities.

ENGINEERING & FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure the hotel building, rooms, equipment, electrical systems, plumbing, generators, air-conditioning systems, water systems, and other facilities are properly maintained.
  • Work with the Engineering/Maintenance team to implement preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor generator, electricity, fuel, water, and utility consumption.
  • Ensure prompt resolution of maintenance issues affecting guests and hotel operations.
  • Monitor maintenance costs and ensure efficient use of resources.

PROCUREMENT & INVENTORY CONTROL

  • Ensure procurement is carried out in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Review supplier performance, pricing, quality, and delivery.
  • Ensure proper approval and documentation of purchases.
  • Monitor hotel inventory, including food, beverages, linen, amenities, cleaning materials, and operating supplies.
  • Work with Finance and departmental heads to reduce wastage, pilferage, and unnecessary costs.
  • Maintain good relationships with key suppliers and vendors.

COMPLIANCE & QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Ensure compliance with applicable hospitality, health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all required hotel licenses, permits, certifications, and statutory requirements are maintained.
  • Establish and monitor quality standards across all departments.
  • Conduct regular operational audits and inspections.
  • Ensure corrective actions are implemented following inspections, audits, or guest feedback.

MANAGEMENT REPORTING

  • Prepare and present regular reports to the Managing Director/Board.
  • Review daily operations reports and departmental performance.
  • Monitor key hotel performance indicators.
  • Conduct daily/weekly/monthly management meetings as appropriate.
  • Provide management with recommendations on revenue, staffing, costs, service quality, and operational improvements.
  • Ensure timely implementation of agreed management decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor\'s Degree or HND in Hospitality Management, Hotel Management, Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
  • A Master\'s Degree or professional qualification in Hospitality/Business Management is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 6 - 9 years\' experience in the hospitality industry, with at least 3 - 5 years in a Hotel General Manager, Operations Manager, Hotel Manager, or equivalent senior management position.
  • Proven experience managing a full-service hotel or similar hospitality establishment.
  • Demonstrated experience in hotel revenue management, budgeting, cost control, and business development.
  • Strong knowledge of Front Office, Housekeeping, F&B, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Security, and Engineering operations.
  • Experience managing and motivating a large and diverse workforce.
  • Knowledge of hotel PMS, POS, accounting, and other hospitality management systems is an advantage.
