About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Construction Engineer who specialises in formwork design, drawings and supervision.
You will set and enforce a single, best-practice standard for formwork on all our projects, and you will be the checkpoint for every formwork structure on site.
You will work with artisans, foremen, site engineers, subcontractors, construction and project managers to make sure every formwork structure is safe, accurate, economical and built exactly as designed.
Key Result Areas Standardisation:
Develop, document and maintain company-wide formwork standards, typical details and checklists for all projects.
Build a standard library of formwork drawings for columns, walls, slabs, beams, staircases, cores and special elements.
Introduce best-practice systems for material selection, reuse, storage and maintenance of formwork and falsework.
Design and Drawings:
Prepare and review formwork and falsework design calculations and shop drawings.
Check designs for loads, concrete pressure, stability, bracing, propping and striking sequences.
Make sure drawings comply with structural drawings, specifications and relevant codes (e.g. BS 5975, BS EN
12812, BS EN 13670, or equivalent).
Site Supervision and Quality Control:
Inspect formwork before every pour and issue formal sign-off or rejection.
Check alignment, level, dimensional accuracy, joint tightness, supports, ties and surface finish.
Hold artisans, supervisors and all concerned parties accountable for building strictly to approved drawings.
Verify striking times and sequences, and the safe removal of formwork.
Safety and Compliance:
Enforce safe working practices around formwork, working at height and temporary works.
Investigate and report formwork defects, near-misses and failures, and drive corrective action.
Training and Mentoring:
Train and coach carpenters, steel fixers, foremen and site engineers on formwork standards and workmanship.
Run regular toolbox talks and siteaudits
Key Performance Requirements You will be measured on:
Zero formwork collapses, major failures or formwork-related safety incidents. 100% of pours inspected and signed off before concrete is placed.
Formwork drawings issued ahead of construction programme dates.
Dimensional accuracy and concrete finish quality within specification, with minimal rework.
Reduced formwork cost per m through reuse, optimisation and waste reduction.
Full adoption of company formwork standards across all active projects.
Completion of scheduled site audits and staff training sessions.
Qualifications and Experience
B.Eng / B.Sc in Civil or Structural Engineering (HND with exceptional experience may be considered).
5–8 years of construction experience, with at least 3 years focused on formwork design,drawings or supervision.
Registration with COREN and membership of NSE (or progress towards both) is an advantage.
Strong working knowledge of formwork systems (timber, steel, aluminium, system formwork) and falsework.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, with Revit or other design tools an advantage.
Solid understanding of concrete technology, structural drawings and temporary works principles.
