Job Description

  • The Civil Engineer is responsible for the planning, execution, supervision and technical coordination of civil and building construction works.
  • The role ensures that construction activities are carried out in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, engineering standards, project schedules, quality requirements and safety procedures.
  • The Civil Engineer works closely with the Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Surveyor, Architects, consultants, contractors and site teams to ensure that projects are delivered safely, accurately, within budget and according to the required quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Planning and Execution

  • Plan and coordinate day-to-day civil construction activities.
  • Ensure works are executed according to approved drawings, specifications and project schedules.
  • Coordinate labour, materials, equipment and subcontractors required for assigned works.
  • Monitor progress and ensure activities are completed within agreed timelines.

Site Supervision:

  • Supervise construction activities on site.
  • Monitor excavation, foundation, concrete, blockwork, drainage, roads and other civil works.
  • Ensure work is executed in the correct sequence and to the required standards.
  • Provide technical direction to supervisors, foremen and construction workers.

Technical Drawing Review:

  • Review architectural, structural and civil engineering drawings.
  • Interpret drawings and communicate technical requirements to the site team.
  • Identify discrepancies or conflicts between drawings and actual site conditions.
  • Liaise with consultants for clarification and technical resolution.

Setting-Out and Survey Coordination:

  • Work closely with the Surveyor to ensure accurate setting-out of construction works.
  • Verify levels, dimensions, alignments and positions of major construction elements.
  • Ensure construction activities follow approved coordinates and benchmarks.
  • Report discrepancies requiring correction.

Concrete and Structural Works:

  • Supervise foundation, reinforcement, formwork and concrete works.
  • Ensure concrete works comply with approved specifications and mix requirements.
  • Monitor reinforcement placement, cover, formwork and structural dimensions.
  • Coordinate required inspections and testing before concrete placement.

Earthworks and Foundation Works:

  • Supervise excavation, filling, compaction and foundation preparation.
  • Monitor excavation depths and formation levels.
  • Ensure proper soil preparation and compaction.
  • Identify and escalate unsuitable ground conditions.

Roads, Drainage and External Works:

  • Supervise construction of access roads, drainage systems, culverts, walkways and other external works.
  • Monitor levels, gradients, alignment and dimensions.
  • Ensure materials and construction methods meet approved specifications.
  • Coordinate testing and inspection of completed works.

Quality Control:

  • Ensure construction works meet approved quality standards.
  • Conduct routine inspections and quality checks.
  • Monitor workmanship and materials used on site.
  • Identify defects and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Materials and Resource Management:

  • Monitor the use of construction materials on site.
  • Ensure materials are used efficiently and according to specifications.
  • Coordinate with Stores and Procurement on material requirements.
  • Report shortages, wastage or unsuitable materials.

Contractor and Subcontractor Management:

  • Supervise contractors and subcontractors working on assigned projects.
  • Ensure subcontractors comply with drawings, specifications and agreed work programmes.
  • Monitor workmanship and productivity.
  • Report poor performance, delays or non-compliance to the Project Manager.

Project Progress Monitoring:

  • Monitor daily construction progress against the approved programme.
  • Prepare daily and weekly progress reports.
  • Identify delays and recommend corrective measures.
  • Provide accurate updates to the Project Manager.

Measurement and Quantity Verification:

  • Take and verify site measurements where required.
  • Work with the Quantity Surveyor to verify completed works.
  • Support preparation and verification of work quantities.
  • Confirm that claimed work has been physically executed before certification.

Cost and Waste Control:

  • Support the Project Manager in controlling construction costs.
  • Monitor material usage and construction wastage.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenditure without compromising quality.
  • Report excessive material usage, rework and avoidable losses.

Site Testing and Inspection:

  • Coordinate required material and construction tests.
  • Monitor concrete testing, soil compaction and other applicable tests.
  • Ensure test results are properly documented.
  • Escalate failed tests and ensure corrective action is taken.

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure construction activities comply with approved HSE procedures.
  • Promote safe working practices among site personnel.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE is used.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents and environmental concerns immediately.

Site Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate site records, drawings, inspection records and technical reports.
  • Record daily activities, site instructions, materials and significant events.
  • Ensure approved drawings and specifications available on site are current.
  • Maintain proper documentation for project handover.

Coordination with Consultants:

  • Coordinate with structural engineers, architects, surveyors, quantity surveyors and other consultants.
  • Participate in technical and site meetings.
  • Implement approved technical instructions.
  • Follow up on outstanding technical issues affecting construction.

Variation and Technical Change Support

  • Identify construction changes, discrepancies and additional works.
  • Notify the Project Manager of potential variations.
  • Provide technical information required for assessment of variations.
  • Ensure no unauthorized changes are incorporated into the works.

Snagging and Project Completion:

  • Conduct inspections of completed works.
  • Identify defects and prepare snag lists.
  • Coordinate rectification of identified defects.
  • Support final inspection, testing and project handover.

Team Leadership and General Duties:

  • Supervise and develop junior engineering and site personnel.
  • Promote discipline, teamwork and professional standards.
  • Provide technical guidance to the construction team.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Project Manager or Management.

Requirements

Education

  • BSc / B.Eng. in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Must possess relevant professional registration where required for the role.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 - 8 years of relevant experience in civil/building construction.
  • Proven experience in site supervision and construction project execution.
  • Experience in foundations, concrete works, drainage, roads and general building construction.
  • Experience working with contractors, consultants and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience on medium to large-scale construction projects is an advantage.
