We seek an experienced, commercially astute and performance-driven professional to join the Company as Portfolio Manager.
The Portfolio Manager will develop and implement investment strategies, construct and manage client and proprietary portfolios, select suitable securities and asset classes, monitor portfolio risks and deliver competitive risk-adjusted returns within approved mandates.
The role will cover approved asset classes such as equities, fixed-income securities, money-market instruments, collective investment schemes and other permissible investments. The successful candidate will lead investment research, supervise analysts, prepare recommendations for the Investment Committee, oversee portfolio implementation and ensure compliance with internal policies, client mandates and regulatory requirements.
This is a decision-making role with direct accountability for portfolio performance, capital preservation, risk management, client satisfaction and growth in assets under management.
Investment Strategy and Portfolio Construction
- Develop and implement investment strategies for client, institutional and proprietary portfolios.
- Translate market outlook and investment philosophy into asset-allocation and security-selection decisions.
- Construct diversified portfolios in line with client objectives, liquidity needs, risk tolerance and investment horizon.
- Determine allocations across equities, fixed income, money markets and other approved asset classes.
- Recommend the purchase, sale, retention or rebalancing of investments.
- Review portfolio strategy in response to market, economic and regulatory developments.
Investment Research and Decision-Making
- Lead research on companies, sectors, securities, markets and economic trends.
- Review financial statements, valuation models, credit reports and market data.
- Evaluate investments using methods such as discounted cash flow, comparable company analysis, dividend discount models, net asset valuation, yield analysis and credit-risk assessment.
- Review recommendations prepared by Investment Analysts.
- Maintain documented investment theses and ensure that decisions are supported by credible analysis.
- Present investment recommendations to Management and the Investment Committee.
Portfolio Performance Management
- Establish performance objectives and approved benchmarks for assigned portfolios.
- Monitor portfolio returns and evaluate performance against targets, benchmarks and market indices.
- Conduct performance attribution to identify the sources of gains, losses, outperformance and underperformance.
- Identify underperforming securities or strategies and recommend corrective action.
- Prepare portfolio-performance reports and management dashboards.
- Rebalance portfolios where allocations deviate from approved limits or investment objectives.
Investment Risk Management
- Identify, measure and manage market, credit, liquidity, interest-rate, currency, concentration, counterparty and operational risks.
- Monitor issuer, sector, maturity, asset-class and counterparty limits.
- Conduct stress testing, scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis.
- Ensure portfolios remain within approved mandates and risk-appetite limits.
- Escalate material breaches, losses and emerging risks promptly.
- Recommend diversification, hedging, rebalancing or exit actions where required.
Investment Committee and Governance
- Prepare investment memoranda, strategy papers and portfolio-review reports.
- Provide clear information on expected returns, risks, liquidity and strategic fit.
- Track Investment Committee decisions and ensure timely implementation.
- Report material portfolio developments, mandate breaches and concentration concerns.
- Support periodic review of investment policies and governance frameworks.
Trade Execution and Investment Operations
- Communicate approved transaction instructions to authorised brokers, banks, custodians and counterparties.
- Ensure trades are executed within approved limits, mandates and authority levels.
- Review transaction confirmations, settlement instructions and portfolio records.
- Monitor settlement and escalate failed or delayed transactions.
- Work with Operations and Finance to reconcile holdings, cash balances, income receipts and transactions.
- Monitor dividends, coupons, maturities, redemptions and other corporate actions.
- Maintain proper segregation of duties between investment decisions, execution, settlement and reconciliation.
Client Portfolio Management
- Understand each client's investment objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity requirements and time horizon.
- Prepare or contribute to client Investment Policy Statements and mandates.
- Ensure portfolios are managed strictly within agreed parameters.
- Participate in client reviews and explain performance, market developments and portfolio strategy.
- Prepare accurate portfolio reports and recommend suitable changes when client needs or market conditions change.
- Work with Business Development and Relationship Management teams to retain and deepen client relationships.
Assets Under Management and Product Growth
- Contribute to the growth and retention of assets under management.
- Support investment proposals and presentations for prospective institutional, corporate and high-net-worth clients.
- Participate in the design and commercialisation of investment products.
- Identify viable market opportunities and suitable portfolio-management solutions.
- Provide investment content for pitch books, investor presentations and marketing materials.
- Ensure business-development activity does not compromise suitability, risk management or regulatory compliance.
Compliance and Regulatory Responsibilities
- Ensure portfolio activities comply with securities laws, regulations, professional standards and internal policies.
- Maintain complete investment records and a clear audit trail.
- Prevent insider dealing, front-running, market manipulation, conflicts of interest and unauthorised personal trading.
- Protect confidential and material non-public information.
- Support regulatory inspections, audits, compliance reviews and reporting.
- Obtain and maintain any professional registration or sponsored-individual status required for the role.
- Report suspected misconduct, control failures and regulatory breaches immediately.
Reporting and Team Leadership
- Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports covering performance, asset allocation, risk exposure, income, mandate compliance and investment pipeline.
- Support Executive Committee and Board reporting.
- Supervise, coach and develop Investment Analysts.
- Allocate research assignments and review reports, financial models and recommendations.
- Promote high standards of integrity, accountability, discipline and continuous learning.
- Collaborate with Operations, Finance, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Sales and Business Development.
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or a related discipline.
- A postgraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Investment Management or Business Administration will be an advantage.
- Relevant professional qualifications such as CFA, CIS, ACA, ACCA, FRM or CAIA will be a strong advantage.
- Candidates performing regulated capital-market functions must possess, or be capable of obtaining, the necessary regulatory registration or sponsored-individual status.
- Minimum of five to seven years' relevant experience in portfolio management, asset management, fund management, investment banking, securities trading, equity research, fixed-income management, private wealth management or a related field.
- At least two years' experience involving direct responsibility for portfolio construction, investment recommendations or portfolio performance.
- Demonstrable experience managing or supporting client, institutional or proprietary portfolios.
- Experience presenting recommendations to an Investment Committee or senior management.
- Experience supervising analysts or investment personnel will be an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian financial markets and the capital-market environment.

AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Subject to approved policies and Delegation of Authority, the Portfolio Manager may recommend investments, implement approved portfolio decisions, initiate rebalancing proposals, issue authorised transaction instructions, allocate research responsibilities and escalate portfolio or compliance concerns.
The Portfolio Manager may not invest outside an approved mandate, exceed authorised limits, commit the Company or a client to unauthorised transactions, conceal losses or breaches, alter records without authority, trade on material non-public information or make unauthorised guaranteed-return representations.
