About the role

• The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for providing senior nursing supervision in both out-patient and in-patient settings.
• The role supports nursing leadership, coordinates care, supervises nursing staff, and ensures compliance with clinical and professional standards.
• This position combines responsibilities for ambulatory care clinics and 24-hour ward-based care.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior nursing leadership and supervision.
• Supervise, mentor, and appraise nursing staff and support their development.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely nursing records.
• Apply infection-prevention and clinical-governance standards.
• Maintain valid NMCN registration/licence and MCPDP compliance.
• Act as senior resource for triage decisions and clinical escalations (out-patient).
• Coordinate injection, dressing, and minor-procedure clinics (out-patient).
• Act as senior clinical resource for deteriorating-patient escalation and complex ward-based care decisions (in-patient).
• Oversee shift handover quality and admission/discharge planning (in-patient).

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from an accredited School/College of Nursing or a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc/BSc Nursing) from a recognized university.
• Completion of orientation/internship and NYSC (for degree holders), or valid exemption.
• Minimum of 8 years of post-registration (NMCN) nursing experience, including experience at Principal Nursing Officer grade or equivalent.
• Experience supervising nursing staff within relevant out-patient and in-patient services, and multidisciplinary hospital team work.

Required skills:

• Leadership and supervision of nursing staff.Knowledge of nursing practice relevant to out-patient and in-patient care.
• Competence in nursing assessment, care planning, and safe medication administration.
• Understanding of patient safety, infection prevention, and clinical governance.
• Accurate nursing record-keeping.
• Effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues.

Nice to have:

• Additional registrable or post-basic nursing qualifications (e.g., midwifery, public health, or specialist nursing certification).
• Experience in a multi-specialty hospital, corporate hospital network, HMO-facing health system, public-sector hospital, or large institutional healthcare environment.
