About the role

Provides senior supervision of laboratory operations, supporting service leadership, supervising testing and staff, and upholding quality and biosafety.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior supervision of laboratory operations, supporting the deputy/head in leading the service.
• Supervise laboratory testing and section work, ensuring standards and throughput.
• Support rostering, workload allocation and skill-mix.
• Support biosafety compliance, audit and quality assurance.
• Supervise, support and appraise junior laboratory staff.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of laboratory practice across disciplines and of quality management.
• Ability to supervise rostering, section supervision and skill-mix.
• Ability to support biosafety, quality assurance and external quality assurance.Incident escalation and equipment/vendor liaison skills.
• Staff supervision and appraisal skills.
• Working knowledge of laboratory quality, biosafety and specimen-handling standards appropriate to the role.

Nice to have

Specialty training or certification relevant to the laboratory discipline.

Experience

Minimum of 8 years of post-registration experience in the relevant profession, including experience at Principal grade or equivalent. Substantial post-registration experience in medical laboratory science practice. Experience supervising and supporting junior medical laboratory science staff. Experience contributing to quality assurance and service improvement. Role-specific experience working within a multidisciplinary hospital team.

Education

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) from a recognised institution. Completion of the required national internship and NYSC, or a valid exemption where applicable.
