Job Objective

  • The Applications Developer (Clinical/ERP Systems) will design, develop, test, and maintain customizations, interfaces, and extensions for clinical applications and enterprise resource planning modules.
  • The role holder will ensure seamless data exchange between systems using healthcare interoperability standards, support system upgrades, and resolve technical defects.
  • He/She will work closely with the Manager, Clinical and ERP Applications, system analysts, and vendors to deliver secure, compliant, and high-performance solutions that enhance hospital operations and patient care.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Custom Application Development & Configuration:

  • Design, code, and test custom extensions for clinical systems and ERP modules to meet operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain database scripts, triggers, and store procedures within the hospital's database environments.
  • Configure user interfaces, workflows, and business rules within existing applications without compromising system stability.
  • Create reusable libraries and APIs to streamline integration between clinical and ERP platforms.
  • Perform unit testing and code reviews, ensuring documentation meets hospital standards.
  • Refactor legacy code to improve performance, security, and maintainability.

System Integration & Interoperability:

  • Develop and maintain healthcare interoperability interfaces between clinical systems and ERP modules.
  • Build and manage integration middleware configurations to enable real-time data exchange.
  • Ensure accurate mapping of data fields across disparate systems.
  • Collaborate with vendors to test end-to-end integration flows before deployment.
  • Troubleshoot interface failures, monitor message queues, and implement error-handling logic.
  • Maintain interface version control and documentation for all integration points.

System Maintenance, Optimization & Patching:

  • Apply vendor-supplied patches, hotfixes, and service packs to clinical and ERP applications in non-production environments before production deployment.
  • Monitor application performance and optimize code and database queries to meet service level agreements.
  • Plan and execute data migration activities for system upgrades, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
  • Maintain disaster recovery scripts and failover procedures for critical applications.
  • Schedule and conduct regular health checks on application servers, reporting anomalies to the Manager.
  • Automate repetitive maintenance tasks using scripting languages.

Security, Compliance & Audit Support:

  • Implement application-level access controls, role-based permissions, and data encryption per organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Write and maintain audit logs for sensitive operations and provide logs to compliance officers.
  • Remediate code-level vulnerabilities identified in security scans or penetration tests within agreed timelines.
  • Assist in periodic compliance reviews by documenting application security controls.
  • Ensure that all custom code does not violate software licensing or regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in regular user access reviews and remove orphaned accounts or excessive privileges.

User Support, Training & Documentation:

  • Provide advanced/second line technical support for complex application errors, including bug fixing and root cause analysis.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, API specifications, data dictionaries, and deployment guides.
  • Develop user-facing materials for clinicians and administrators on application features.
  • Train IT support staff on common application errors and debugging techniques.
  • Participate in user feedback sessions to identify recurring pain points and propose technical solutions.
  • Document change requests and obtain sign-off from the Manager before development.

Project Management & Continuous Improvement:

  • Collaborate with the Manager to estimate development effort, milestones, and risks for projects (e.g., EHR upgrade, ERP module expansion).
  • Use Agile tools (Jira, Azure DevOps, Trello) to track tasks, report progress in daily stand-ups, and meet sprint goals.
  • Conduct post-implementation reviews of developed solutions, gathering metrics on defect rates and user adoption.
  • Research emerging healthcare IT standards (e.g., new FHIR versions, SMART on FHIR) and propose pilot implementations.
  • Participate in quarterly vendor technical reviews to identify integration gaps or optimization opportunities.
  • Mentor junior developers or interns on clinical/ERP development best practices as directed by the Manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in application development, ERP systems administration, software engineering, systems integration, or a related IT role.
  • Relevant certifications in ERP platforms, application development, database management, healthcare interoperability, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or information security are an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or other relevant languages for custom application development, scripting, system integration, and automation.
  • Experience using AI-powered development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar solutions, to generate, review, debug, test, document, and optimise code, as well as support API development and workflow automation.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code and outputs for accuracy, performance, security vulnerabilities, maintainability, and compliance with relevant requirements.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including SQL and NoSQL, cloud platforms, application deployment environments, and AI model integration.
  • Experience integrating clinical applications and ERP systems, with knowledge of healthcare data exchange standards and interoperability protocols.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts, including their application to healthcare systems, predictive analytics, process automation, and workflow optimisation.
